#Repost @plusultracoins ・・・ Mexico: 1625/4 and 1627, 8 Reales. Diego de Godoy issues showing the new design changes from 1625-mid 1629. The design was again changed in 1630. The 1625 change brought in a new style cross. Instead of the large globes of early D issues these issues of Philip IV, show crosses with open flowers end the end. The tip in a diamond shape. The next redesign would show these flowers opened even further with the petals as far back as 90 and 180 degrees. Both of these coins were salvaged from the Natuna Wreck aka the true “Spice Islands Wreck” from the initial dive. The wreck site has been under heavy guard since 2018, by the Marine military and can no longer be salvaged. Nor can the nearby beach even be searched. No new coins will ever come from this wreck in the foreseeable future. Note the die variety of the obverse example right. There is an “O” stamped in the Naples and Sicily portion of the shield. This is not doubling but an error by the die sinker. This O was confirmed on several other coins making it just one more unique die variety from this wreck site. The O was likely a misplaced supplemental mint mark for oM. (Mexico’s mint mark is simply M. The addition of the o is just supplementary and not necessary). Or it was the O’s used to create the 8, but one bounced or was somehow stamped way out of field.... Curious. Natuna Wreck. 1628. (aka “Spice Islands Wreck”).
