What do OEM markings mean on a tire?
Have you ever noticed how some tires are apparently made exclusively for BMW or Mercedes? That’s because car manufacturers get in touch with tire manufacturers and they spend up to 3 years working together to make a tire for a particular model.
Tires are an incredibly important part of a vehicle. Tires affect your acceleration, braking, handling, fuel mileage, road noise and ride comfort. All car manufacturers have a vision of how they want their model to perform, and a generic tire will just not do. So they collaborate with a tire manufacturer and work on creating a bespoke tire of an existing tire pattern with a few added tweaks. For example: Mercedes will have a discussion with Pirelli regarding PZERO pattern and mention it needs to have slightly stiffer sidewall for better handling and low road noise for comfort, so the tire is designed with those aspects in mind.
So let’s break down a tire description:
For ex. Pirelli PZERO 225/40 R18 92Y MO
Pirelli - Brand Name
PZERO - Pattern Name
225 - Tire width
40 - Tire height
R18 - Radial 18 size rims
92 - Load size that can be carried (92 = 1,389 pounds/630kg)
Y - Speed rating (Y = Up to 186mph/299 kmh)
MO - Specially designed for Mercedes vehicles.
Below are the codes used by tire manufacturers to highlight the homologation for a car manufacturer:
