Pixie Dragon Anatomy
Pixie dragons are a type of long, short-limbed dragon, usually covered in soft fur.
They are most distinct for their long bodies, large, drooping ears, and small wings, but notable features such as horns, short snouts, large visible claws, plantigrade legs, and long tails come together to create a unique appearance that sets them apart from your typical dragon.
Wings
Pixie dragon wings are typically rather small, and function more through magic than mechanical work. They can be wings of any animal you can imagine, no limits! The most common varieties are bat-like wings and feathered wings, with insect-like wings being quite uncommon.
Horns
The horns of a pixie dragon have a considerably wide variety of possibilities; have fun with it! The most common horns are the short stubby kind, and tend to be on the smaller side regardless of shape, but large horns are certainly possible. I'd love to see what creative horns you pick for yours!
Tails
Pixie dragon tails are quite long and are typically the same length as the measurement from their snout to their rumps. There is natural variation in that, of course, so this is just a general way to eyeball it. They can be much longer, if you wish, or they can be a bit shorter, but significantly shorter (or missing) tails are usually only seen as a result of injury or birth differences. Rarely, pixie dragons may be seen with two tails, and some consider them a sign of good luck and wisdom.
There are not many hard limits on what tail you can choose—feel free to attach whatever you wish, but they always naturally have long tails.
Ears
Pixie dragon ears are quite large and a little droopy, emerging from the sides of their heads rather than sitting erect at the top. Their ears are mobile, flicking and twitching as they emote, and can lift and turn back easily. Most pixie dragon ears are each as long as their head is wide, but shorter and rounder ear shapes are also not uncommon, and even larger ears are perfectly possible.
Snouts
The snouts of pixie dragons are always short and stout, with large, round noses. The nose itself is most similar in shape to raccoons and badgers, but their snouts are typically no longer in facial proportion than what you might find on a domesticated cat or a river otter.
Limbs and Paws
Their limbs are short, similar in proportion to ferrets and other long, short-limbed mustelids, and walk with plantigrade anatomy. Pixie dragons do not ever have digitigrade legs, even when anthro. They possess distinct, long claws, and their paws have characteristics much like bears and wolverines. Pixie dragon paws are wide and flat, and their paw pads cover much of the walking surface, similar to animals such as skunks or bears.
In anthro designs, you're welcome to stylize their paws into something more convenient, but they can use their original paws perfectly fine in any scenario.
Bodies
Pixie dragons typically have long bodies, with proportions similar to ferrets, but can be as fantastically long as you'd like. A lot of pixie dragons have a slim and sleek build, but plenty of them are more stocky or fat as well. I take inspiration from animals such as ferrets and linsangs for body language and overall vibes.
Fur
Pixie dragon fur can be absolutely any texture and come in any color, pattern, and length, including bald! Get creative with it!
MISC
If you wish to show any of these features partially or fully missing, significantly smaller than average, uneven, etc, go ahead. These sorts of features are almost exclusively a result of birth differences or injury rather than "typical" variation, but birth differences and injury are by no means rare!
Here are some of my other inspirations for anatomy and stylizations! With the otters and Timon, I take inspiration from their limb proportions, low crotches, and large noses. For the angora ferrets, I think they make good references for long-furred pixie dragons.
i made super basic bases for my pixie dragons. u can play w them like paper dolls and color it urself! feel free to edit anything ud like, just have fun!
the main features i keep across each of them are these: big droopy ears, horns, wings, long tail, long body, claws, short limbs. feel free to look in my pixie dragons tag to see examples of other ones ive designed!

im assuming you want to leave room for creative freedom but im really curious about if there are any more common traits about pixie dragons like paw pad shape or snout shape ! they look really cool and id be so interested in hearing more about them :3
for paws i imagined them as plantigrade beasts with paws inspired by animals like woverines and bears!! they generally have pretty stout legs with paws that are sort of broad (and they have thumbs!)
their snout shape is pretty short. here are the only drawn examples i have of either :) u can stylize the snout shape if u wish, but it will usually be pretty short, no longer proportions than u might see on a cat. im inspired by a lot of cartoons like care bears or rainbow brite, toony fursuits with big chunky noses, and stuff like @skunkes chibi art when it comes to the snout
and when drawing them more anthro, i usually make their paw and thumb a little more conventionally useful like a lot of people do when drawing animals anthro. i take style inspiration for the anthro versions from things like timon from the lion king and the otters from zootopia
i hope this provides some insight!
do you perhaps have more info on your pixie dragon species? or is all of that up to the owner of each character? love them btw :)
i wanted them to have a lot of creative freedom so its mostly up to the owners! i might make a loose guide for them soon but i mostly just designed them for people to have funsies with them
come to think of it i probably should have introduced them to people before just tossing them out as adopts, but i wasnt sure if anyone would even be interested in all that and figured some might just grab them because they look cool lol
i dont have any lore in mind because id like them to be able to fit into whatever setting a person wants, but i do think they would have magical abilities like healing or speaking to animals or being able to summon a burger on command
