New Year's Stalker
This is my gift for @zhadyra as part of the @pidgeholidayexchange2018. I hope you like it. :)
Summary: Pidge Gunderson doesn’t have time for celebrating the approaching New Year. He is far more Content with analyzing data. Alone! - thank you very much. This plan however was not approved by the force of nature known as Lance - ruling sovereign over his Team.
Show: Voltron
In the world of physics there was a slight existing probability, however unlikely, that a certain event could occur. "Come on Pidge, the party is going to be fun! You have to go!"
There was a probability to guess an unknown password right on the first try, to have a person with almost the same gene combination as yourself. A very low possibility, but existing nonetheless:
Getting Pidge Gunderson to a party- not so much.
"Back off Lance!" With a shove that any other sane person would have taken for an act of hostility -not the optimistic Cuban boy of course- the smaller cadet broke away from the pilots grasp.
"Come on Pidge, it's the New Year." All the pilot's emphasis was cast on 'New Year' as if the celebration of a new digit was the requirement for the continued survival of mankind.
"For once you can't tinker away on your computer. You'll have to get out!" Lance leaned in haughtily. "Get to know some Ladies!"
"Lance..." Hunk's voice held a warning edge. After a year of their bickering the engineer was well-adjusted to the explosive dynamic of his two comrades by now. However, it was too late:
Like so many times before Lance was the lit match falling on dynamite- a rather short piece of explosive, but not less ferocious in its destruction- mind you.
"I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR STUPID PARTIES! I have far more important stuff to worry about!"
Some clattering and two yelps later the door to Pidge's room clacked shut with finality.
Her eyes drifted to the mirror on the wall taking in her small frame, further dwarfed by the size of Katie's - no Pidge Gunderson's, dark cluttered room.
A new year.
Back home Matt and her had always made it a point to out build one another with self-made fireworks - often enough Sam Holt had been the unwilling judge of their contest. Nobly sacrificing one of his clothing items for their experiment.
Officially, as far as their parents were concerned, the day ended with a stern scolding and the two siblings send to their Rooms.
Matt however had never been deterred in the slightest by any form of punishment - a trait which was either genetically or through sheer proximity passed down to Katie - much to their parents unending joy.
About two hours into their imprisonment, at exactly 23 o'clock, he 'climbed'- better yet fell -through her window.
Each year they ended up on the roof, shoulder to shoulder, peering into the stars which, back then, held wonder and excitement: A certain promise of adventure and knowledge.
With a deep sigh Katie turned and peered through her ‘new’ window into the evening. Most of the cadets defied the cold winds at small bonfires, illuminating the dark like small stars the vast emptiness of space. They drank and laughed, eagerly awaiting the coming change of date.
The girl's tired eyes once more focused on the Data at hand, their dark circles contrasted by the too bright light of her display.
"Lance why don't you just give it a rest." Hunk didn't like where this was going at all. "Pidge was pretty clear in wanting to work, not hitting the Party. Listen!: This is not going to end well!"
The engineer almost ran over his friend who, at once, became rooted to the floor.
Lance turned around blue eyes blazing at Hunk in an untypical serious expression. "Oh, Pidge's going to party today buddy and so are you!"
"But Lance-" Hunk's pleading voice was met by deaf ears and a retreating backside.
This wasn't possible! There simply had to be a method to this chaotic frequencies. They couldn't be random! What was she overlooking? Come on Gunderson!
"Hard nut to crack Katie?" Pidge could almost see her brother's face grinning at her determined stare. He'd say: "There is no problem as tough as this-" flicking her forehead "-come on take a break. Afterwards you'll get it. I promise."
Small droplets of salt water threatened the cluttered hardware around her table. He wasn't here! And she didn't get it! Was she grabbing for straws?
A hard pounding on the door brought her sniffing to an instant halt. With a swift swish of her uniform's sleeve all traces of water were erased from her face, leaving only a simply tired cadet Gunderson. A deep breath and protesting screeching of the mishandled door later she stood face to face with Lance once more.
Pidge inhaled- to scream at her teammates no doubt- but was astonished when her murderous expression was ignored and Lance shoved undeterred into her room.
"So you want salsa dip with the Tortillas, or what?"
"LANCE I DON'T-"
Beep, beep.
The radio clock flashed the numbers 2-3-0-0 in green letters. A stark contrast battling with the creeping shadows cast by her display.
Encouraged by her sudden silence Hunk now followed into the lion's den carrying a wide assortment of snacks.
"Look Pidge you're in my squad now which means-" Lance stood before them with the posture of a general holding a speech in front of his victorious troops "- we take on this new year together." He crushed Pidge to his side pointing to the window. "Which means we celebrate out there, or in here: I don't care, but we'll do it together!"
Two figures stood shoulder to shoulder in the dim light and for the first time since entering the Garrison Katie Holt smiled.
"You'd better brought cheese dip. Idiot."
