They say the first gift/boon is always taken by the gods. A ceremonial tithe to pay the toll for your first year on earth. The sun and moon islands interpret this line in different ways.
One seeks to, depending on your interpretation, dupe/disrespect the gods by giving something irrelevant or of no value as a gift. The other, depending on your interpretation, bows to heavily, giving the gods dearly held possessions and valuable trinkets.
One pays no mind to the gods. Where have they been? Where are they now?
The other begs for their return, hoping that lavish gifts will beget their gaze, if only but for a moment.
Yet the gods have abandoned both, with neither island the wiser.
They blame each other, one saying that the other island disrespected the gods, and for that we are forsaken.
The other blames in the same, yet stating that we have shown weakness, and for that the gods are embarrassed by us. For by their logic, we are made in their image, so there is no need to prostrate oneself for their sake.
They both agree that we are their children, and that we were made with love and aspiration.
Yet, again, both islands are forsaken. And neither has had the blessing of divine grace in ages. As for why? Nobody knows.
Some say this is the true test of the gods, to leave us abandoned. To see if we can truly cooperate as a peoples under one creed, and collaboratively rise above the rest.
Some say this is no test. That the gods are long dead and never to return. Or worse, that they remain unchanged, but have chosen to abandon their people.
