Do you have any advice for small talk? I find myself devoid of subjects for my characters to discuss on the side.
Small talk can actually say a lot about your characters, so it’s good to use it if you use it well. If your characters are social butterflies, they’ll be good with small talk and they’ll be the ones driving the conversation, not letting it die down. If your characters are shy, socially awkward beings, the talk is going to be short and uncomfortable.
As far as subjects for small talk are concerned, it all depends on your plot. Small talk often revolves around the weather or recent, relevant events. That being said, what your characters are going to walk about depends on what’s happening in your story at the time. You can also use small talk to slip a little back story into your book, as long as it doesn’t sound forced. It could also be used to drop little hints that will mean a lot later on, specially if the reader doesn’t understand its significance right away.
To sum up, talking about the weather is always great when you want to make small talk sound awkward. Other than that, you can try to use small talk to make your characters more real, more relatable, more interesting. Small talk doesn’t have to be completely pointless. Actually, everything in your book should be there for a reason so make sure you make everything - even small talk - matter.
