The last few texts you had sent Trinity have been delivered for a while. You knew that her twelve hour shift would be longer than that but after two hours you started to get antsy. You planned to start making dinner when she let you know she was coming home. The clock had passed ten and you pulled out your phone yet again, hoping you missed a text but nothing had come through.
You were just about to call Trinity when you heard the familiar jingle of Trinity's keys in the front door. You instantly cross the apartment and stand a few feet away from the door as it swings open revealing her.
Trinity's hair is down and she's wrapped up in her favourite worn sweater. Her face is tired and you can tell it's been a long day. Her eyes seem to lighten when she sees you. You rush forward wrapping your arms around her, almost knocking her over in the process. She holds you back allowing herself to melt into your arms. “Hey, you didn’t answer my text, I heard about Pittfest on the news. Is everything okay?”. You ramble quickly pulling back to gently cup her face. You can see Trinity's realization that she's been unreachable for more than a few hours now. “I'm sorry baby.. We had so many shooting victims it took us hours to help them all”.
“Right.. I'm sorry I just got worried and dinner isn't made either. I didn't want to make it too early and let it go cold if you came home late”. You cringe, already imagining how exhausted and hungry she is. “Hey don’t worry we can order something… im sorry for not texting I was um .. a little busy”. Trinity finally nods over her shoulder and that's when you first notice the unfamiliar stranger standing in your apartment doorway.
He’s awkwardly standing on the carpet clutching a backpack and a few other things. He clears his throat before speaking “Uh sorry.. I'm Dennis”. He waves awkwardly, releasing Trinity hadn’t briefed you yet. “Yes sorry baby. Me and Huckleberry both started working together today. He needed a place to stay for a bit and I told him we would let him stay in the guest bedroom”. Trinity explains, she already pulled back from the hug but her left arm is around your waist. “I'm sorry I should have asked you first”.
“No no it's okay”. You smile, stepping away from Trinity to approach Whitaker and shake his hand. You also shut the door behind him. “It's nice to meet you Dennis, It's all good really, me and Trin don’t use the spare room. You're welcome to stay for as long as you need”.
“Thank you, I promise I won’t be loud and I can help around the house”. Whitaker says, the nervous look in his eyes hadn’t quite left. “ Of course, Well um I don’t have dinner ready yet but I can order something for all of us and get it delivered”. You turn and start leading both of them out of the entrance. “What do you like Dennis?”. You ask over your shoulder as he places down his duffle bag.
“Oh.. I’ll eat whatever you two want to order really, I'm not picky”. Whitaker shrugs. “Hmm well we both really like this Thai place. It's only a few blocks from the apartment. It's so good I'm sure you’ll love it”. Dennis smiles nodding “yeah sounds good”.
“Well why don’t you go unpack in your room and me and Trin can order some food”. You reach for your phone already pulling out your phone to pull up the menu. Whitaker nods and heads down the hall.
You finally turn to Trinity smiling and pulling her into a hug. “Long day huh”. You whisper, rubbing a comforting hand up and down her back. Trinity sighs already melting into your touch. “You don’t even want to know babe.. I couldn’t just let him sleep in the hospital after the day we had”. Trinity lets out an even deeper sigh of exhaustion showing in her features.
“I understand, I really don’t mind.. He seems nice, kind of skittish but after the day you two had I can’t blame him. You’re so sweet Trin”. You smile, cupping her face to press a kiss to her cheeks and then her lips. Trinity rolls her eyes but you know she's not truly annoyed with your comment. “Yes yes im perfect”. Trinity gloats, but you can see the soft look in her eyes. You give her a kiss on the cheek before pulling away.
“How about you go have a shower ? And the food will be here when you're done, okay?” You smile as her face twists into a playful scowl. “Are you saying that I smell?”. Trinity shrugs off her sweater, draping it over the couch. “Yes you smell like a hospital please go shower”. You grin as she dramatically rolls her eyes and goes to walk towards the bathroom. Not before she sneaks another kiss on your cheek.
When Trinity gets out of the shower you’re already waiting on the couch with the food. You offered Whitaker a spot on the couch but he politely declined, opting to eat in his room instead which didn't bother you. You and Trinity eat dinner in a comfortable silence. You don’t pry about Trinity's day because despite the comfy clothes she is dressed in you can see the tension still lingering in her shoulders. After dinner is finished you and Trinity drag yourselves to bed. The two of you settle into bed. Trinity reaches out and shuts off the bedside lamp.
You scoot closer to her reaching out to pull Trinity into your arms. She rolls over onto her stomach, her head gently tucked into your shoulder. You wrap your arm around her and her hand sneaks under your sleep shirt resting on your stomach. You both settle into a comfortable silence but you can’t help but whisper. “Are you okay Trin, you don’t have to talk about work unless you want to”. Your hand reaches up to run through her messy hair.
You can feel Trinity stiffen just a little before she nuzzles her face further into your neck. “It was a rough first day”. Trinity mumbles, her grip tightening. Your hand that was in her hair moves down to her back. You rub continuous circles down her spine. “I'm sorry baby, I can’t even imagine what you had to see and go through today”. There's a long silence before you hear sniffles from beside you. Your heart aches as you feel Trinity's warm wet tears on your shoulder. You reach over, flicking on the lamp and turning to see your girlfriend's tear filled eyes.
You cup her face in your hands, gently wiping the tears falling from her eyes. She squeezes her eyes shut and a few more tears fall down her cheeks. She tries to take a breath but it comes out more like a choked sob. “Hey im here.. You’re safe I promise”. You whisper softly, not breaking eye contact. You sit up fully pulling her into a hug. Trinity clings to you, her hands gripping your shoulders particularly hard. You hold her close to yourself, not squeezing too tight but enough to keep her grounded.
You can feel her hand curl in your sleep shirt as she presses her face further into your shoulder. Your one hand moves up to hold the back of her head while your other one rubs up and down her back in slow motions. Despite Trinity's persistent grip on your shirt her shuddering breaths are somehow growing more rapid.
You pull back a little and Trinity looks up at you, now realizing that she's having a panic attack. You react instantly, taking her hands in yours. “Hey.. you’re safe.. Im here .. im not going anywhere okay?”. You give her hands a reassuring squeeze. Trinity goes to take a breath but it comes out like a gasp for air.
“Lets just take a deep breath.. In and out”. You instruct and you can feel Trinity's grip on your hand tighten as she focuses and manages a shaky breath, not breaking eye contact. “Good.. just like that baby.. One more okay?’. You demonstrate a long deep breath again and she does as well. You continue this ritual as many times as it takes for her shoulders to drop.
You both just sit in a comfortable silence and Trinity wipes her final tear from her cheek. Her hair is messy and clinging to parts of her cheeks. Her eyes are red and wet when she looks up at you. You silently motion for her to climb back into your arms. She sniffles before cuddling back into your arms. Your left arm is around her and she's curled into your chest. Trinity drapes her arm over your stomach. You decide that a few minutes of silence is what is best for her.
You lean down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead and she physically leans further into it. After a few more minutes in comforting silence you speak up. “You ok baby?”. You whisper softly to keep the soft feeling. She nods against your chest. “Did you?” You begin to ask before Trinity cuts you off. “No”. She says simply, her voice a little horse from the crying.
You nod, reaching out to take her hand and press a kiss to her knuckles. “I know I say it all the time but.. You can always tell me when you feel that way”. “Anytime, anywhere you can always tell me what's bothering you”.
“Even if you don’t want to talk.. I'll still be here okay? I'm not going anywhere. You're stuck with me Trinity”. You hear her release a breath through her nose and a little smile spread across her lips as she buries her face back into your chest. She turns looking up at you. “There you are” You whisper softly leaning down to kiss her gently, letting her be to one to close the gap. “There’s no one else I would rather be stuck with”. Trinity whispers almost too quietly for you to hear. You can tell that the exhaustion is catching up to her. You reach fully to flick off the lamp and let Trinity settle fully.
“I love you”. You say pressing a kiss, finding her forehead in the dark. Trinity mumbles back a sleepy “love you too”. As she falls asleep safely.
