weirdly specific? maybe. but the idea came to me today and i couldn't just let it be an idea.
Took this pic a few days ago. I was enjoying the rain storm that had come through our little town. Reminded me that I need to be more grateful.
This year has a been a very different year for me. Lots of changes, many challenges. But I have people that love me. I have people that want to help and sometimes it's hard to see that. Gonna make an effort to start getting back with those people.
She packed our the little theater, and there was an overflow outside. She went out in the rain and talked to them as well. Republicans and MAGAts in the area are melting down on social media. They really think Clinton and Essex counties are Trumper land. I wish I had been able to go now. She drew around 1700 people, I assume some were from VT since it is just across the lake. The Strand holds 900 people. That's wild!

Yet again, racism at SUNY Plattsburgh (it’s the norm now~!)
So because people should know stuff's happening, stuff's going down in Plattsburgh, NY. Or, more specifically, SUNY Plattsburgh.
Last week on February 13th a SUNY Plattsburgh student put on Snapchat that she wanted to "hang with some n-" (I am inserting the dash, she said the actual word). After several people basically going, What did she just say??? it was escalated to "lynching some n- tonight!". The administration responded on February 15th with a small meeting in Yokum Hall, simply saying they were going to move her to a different dorm and that would be the extent of action taken. Rightfully, students got pissed. That night an emergency town hall meeting was called for faculty, staff, and students in which administrators showed their side of things. Over a thousand students ended up attending, and most of them walked out en masse when no other disciplinary actions would be taken.
There were protests happening, a march down Rugar Street (of course this all happens for the two days I was away from campus), and there's currently a policy of not going to classes that a lot of people here on campus are participating in. After my morning class today (which I had to go because I missed the last one) I also won't be going to classes except to Dr. Justin Lowry's archaeology class because he's been outspoken in his support of students.
On February 16th the Student Association called a meeting with the administration to list the demands students who attended meetings had voted on. It included tightening the Student Code Of Conduct (and, you know, actually enforcing it, like, EVER) and the resignation of
President John Ettling for just general lack of leadership to do anything about this and also the fact that hate speech and stuff like the off campus housing getting spray painted with swastikas has gone unconfronted despite people knowing exactly who did it in both cases. Also the fact that a frat is still allowed to be operating on campus after the horrific evidence of their hazing that came up last semester. And sure the students got reprimanded and like a handful out of the entire frat got suspended or expelled but really? REally? He did call in SUNY Central as soon as students started getting mad (more on that below) and has said in public and in private that he'll resign if students want it, but we'll see what actually happens.
J.W. Wiley who's the Director of the Center For Diversity and also didn't stand up for students in many cases. Also, this guy's been known throughout students and reported since at least 2011 (so imagine how long it's been known among students and not reported) for repeatedly sexually harassing numerous students and TAs. But he's ~such a nice guy~ and ~so good at his job~ and ~so respected~ and ~we don't give a shit~ (that last one isn't an official reason but we can all read between the lines here) that nothing's ever happened to him. So the anger at sexual harassment and rape being a big problem on campus is also part of the mix now because he's involved. Also, at the town meeting when his name got called he threw a HUGE hissy fit and completely victimized himself and saying how it's all about race and him specifically and how could they say such things. Not the most professional or decent human being response, so good job there buddy.
Bryan Hartman also got called out for complete disregard for this situation and student concerns lots of times. Which is charming, considering he's vice president of Student Affairs. In people who have to deal with him (e-boards of clubs, the Student Association) there's always a lot of eye rolling and groaning when you talk about talking to him because you all know fuck all's gonna happen and stuff he does tell you has broadly been empty promises.
Some other dude also directly involved with students also got named but I can't remember his name and none of the emails sent out en mass to students will name anybody.
Like I said above, President Ettington called in SUNY Central (the big guys in the SUNY system to whom all schools and people must bow down to) and on the 19th they came to have a chat with students who could come in and voice their complaints and frustration.
Over the weekend there was lots of mockery on social media and also threats of violence against students, notably someone saying he'll "fuck up those porch n-". It was paired with a picture of him in an NRA shirt holding a gun. The picture was from months ago, but the words were that day. There's lots of other threats of violence, people saying they'll kill any minority students who give them lip. The police went to the porch n- guy's house and are watching him, but there's also, as said by the administration, an increased police presence on campus as well as plain clothes officers and dorm patrols. I've seen none of the three, and people I've asked also haven't seen it.
So now we're at February 20th. In about an hour there's gonna be a huge faculty meeting for everyone to discuss student demands. Campus-wise, we're at a point where classes are severely depleted and the campus feels emptier. Both because of the protests of not going to class but also, more importantly, the fact that faculty are recieving email after email after email that there's no way in fuck that minority student is coming to campus/leaving their dorm. One of my professors teaches four classes and has over eighty emails of people too fearful to come in. There's some appreciation that administrators are (being forced into) taking it seriously, but no one's joyful because we're all waiting to see what happens. Many people are figuring nothing will get done. Many people are talking about how SUNY Central doesn't take input on things normally and won't hear. Many professors have expressed faith in our generation.
I'll keep you guys updated, but that's where we're at right now.

I dunno if anyone’s up in this wonderfully wintery area, but @a-magical-knight needs a place to stay as soon as humanly possible until the last week of August this year. Due to a seriously fucked up job situation she’s moving up here sooner than planned. She’s a Star Trek nerd, a theatre nerd, plays D&D, just like a nerd in general and an incredible human. She has two cats and is religious about paying bills so you won’t have to worry. She already has a job interview because people know she’s good shit, and just needs a room in an apartment, an apartment itself, whatever.
