How to not be secure
Robert: 3 attempts to get my login right? I need more coffee, clearly…
Alisdair: …usually I find using "password" as an, er, password makes it unforgettable. Not ideal from a security perspective though ;-)
Robert: Maybe this is a good time for me to mention @1Password in this conversation? ;D
Alisdair: that's right… I use one password. Same one for everything. Clever, eh? LOL!
Robert: ba-dom-tish! Good one, Alisdair! Made my morning now! :D
Alisdair: glad to be of service ;-) Another handy hint – username = Admin. Saves so much time having to remember anything else LOL!
Robert: The real problem with that strategy occurs when you need more than one account in any given service.
Alisdair: mmm…. admin1, admin2, admin3 – sorted :-D
Robert: Ah, perfect! I'll just write down which goes where on this here sticky note. Brilliant! :D
Alisdair: oh yes, I forget – write it down, next to the PIN number for your bank card! Er… #securityfail ;-)
Robert: Been there, done that, have the sticky note attached to the card at all times. You know, just in case! ;)
Both me and Alisdair would like to take this time and remind you about the importance of having good computer security. Specially in the form of good passwords, unique to each login, as well as that you should also do regular backups of all your important data.
It's all fun and games until you have someone break into your accounts, use you as spam-fodder or even worse; take all your money!
Please, for the sake of all of us, get yourself an external hard drive and start backing up as soon as you can. It's not expensive anymore and it's a great insurance against tragical hard drive failures!
