Hey guys, I’m gonna be drawing for probably the next hour and a half, so I can take some requests? I’ll try to do first come first serve but honestly if something inspires me I’ll probably prioritize it...

Chapter One - Still Among the Living

Consciousness came rushing in with the force of a runaway tank, the sheer force behind it driving the air from His lungs. His eyes snapped open as he gasped for breath and the world rolled in confusion. For a heart-stopping second, He was sure he’d finally gone blind; all he could see was dull shades of white and gray no matter where he tried to look. Panic clawed at his stomach, crawling up into his already constricted chest and throat, practically begging him to give in to it and be sick. It would be so easy to just give in…

He closed his eyes again and focused on breathing instead, counting out each inhale and exhale until the thump of his heart evened out. The world was still washed in white and gray, but no longer only that when he tried looking around again. There was the doorway. Here was a bedside table. The window on the far side of the side of the room had it’s curtains drawn just enough to block the view, but not the light from outside. He took another deep breath and recognized the smell of cigarette smoke. The rustle of paper combined with the creak of a chair and then Paul was leaning into sight.

“Good to see you awake, sir. Thought for sure you’d be out for at least a few more days.”

He winced as he shifted, the movement bringing to light the myriad of complaints his body had, as well as the fact that his right arm was so heavily bandaged, it was practically immobile. Trying to sit up made everything in his chest and back seize, leaving him gasping for breath again. “Status?” He croaked once the pain started to recede.

“Taser shot. One of those R&D things we found, what, three months ago? Took you down like a sack of hammers.” Paul reached over, helping support His head so that he could drink some water. “Fried about half the circuits in your arm thingie. Damn lucky it didn’t surge and fry the rest of you.”

He push at the other and Paul stepped back. “I meant the mission.”

“You always do,” Paul grumbled, taking the chance to light his next cigarette from the stub of his current one before answering. “Resistance lasted maybe another ten minutes. A bunch of beaker boys don’t usually put up much of a fight once you blow out a few kneecaps. Since you were out of commission, we couldn’t hack the computers. So we packed the place with enough explosives to blow it to hell and back. Did it twice, actually; just to make sure. Pat stayed behind to monitor the situation while I dragged your ass out. That was two days ago.” Paul took a heavy drag from the new cigarette and sighed it back out, paper rustling once more as he settled back into his chair. “Patryk called to confirm about an hour ago. The last of the stragglers have surrendered to the proper authorities and are being processed now. So mission accomplished, sir–the Red Army is dead.“

The Red Army is dead. The words didn’t seem real, like His brain was refusing to process their significance. The goal he’d been chasing after for nearly a decade now had finally been achieved. Wasn’t there supposed to be joy, a sense of accomplishment in the face of such a thing?  The Red Army is dead. He repeated the phrase to himself, hoping to make it more tangible through repetition, but the words still sounded muted, inscrutable. All he felt was cold, empty, and out of sync with the world. There was nothing waiting for him behind this final curtain. The Red Army is…

Another break in reality struck Him, this one more terrible in it’s clarity and significance. If the army was dead, there was no need for a leader. The Red Army is dead. Red Leader is dead. That thought came through crystal clear, a single shattering note that pierced right through him. He could feel the pieces cracking, slipping, leaving little bloody cuts to what little self remained in their wake. The Red Army is dead. Red Leader is dead. It was almost poetic that he’d been shot, even if it had only been a taser round.

Tord stared at the ceiling, stunned by the revelation. “It’s over, isn’t it?”

“Yeah…” Paul agreed slowly, scratching his cheek. “I guess it is over.”

The lackluster response finally brought the words into focus. The Red Army is dead. Red Leader is dead. But instead of the weight of responsibility lifting, Tord felt crushed by something even heavier. This was supposed to be an end, a stop to everything. The ordeal was finally over. There should have been nothing left to linger. Silence hung like a smothering blanket for several minutes as Tord floundered, trying to figure out what went so wrong that this wasn’t the end yet. 

“…then why am I still alive?”

Paul laughed at the question, hard enough that he started coughing after a few good guffaws, but still ending on a chuckle. “Because we still have a shit ton of apologies to make.”

He said it so easily, like a simple apology would right every wrong they had committed along the way. Well, maybe it would be that easy for him and Patryk. Their sins were far fewer and much less severe. For Tord, however… Dull gray eyes slipped closed again as a wave of exhaustion overcame him. “They’re not going to forgive me. Not after what I did. That’s why I did it.”

“Well…that’s not something we can control, is it?” Paul patted the side of Tord’s leg before standing. “Rest up for now, sir. We’ll worry about how to cross that burned bridge when we get to it.”

Tord opened his eyes again to watch the other pack up, ready to give his patient some privacy now that he was awake. Paul was almost to the door when Tord said, “The Red Army is dead. You have no reason to call me sir any longer.” Paul paused, seeming to think it over. “You’re right.” He turned and gave Tord a crooked smile. “But I’d still follow you anywhere, sir.”

The door closed softly, leaving Tord to once more contemplate the ceiling in silence. He cautiously tried to move again, gauging where the worst of his injuries were. The electric shock of the taser round both was and wasn’t as bad as the reports had suggested. Everything in his torso was unhappy with him, and that was two days after initial burst. They must have upped the voltage; he wondered why. It was too bad the servers had been annihilated before he could answer that question. It felt like a worthwhile thing to know even if it was a moot point.

When he pulled the blanket away, he found a rather impressive bruise on his chest from where the shot had impacted. It had missed the chest strap of his ESEF by centimeters, hitting high near his collarbone. That close to the frame, to the neural interface tape he used to connect with it, it was a small wonder that there hadn’t been a surge. Maybe it would be worthwhile to extend the shoulder guard down and over a little more. That way it would–

Would what? There was no next battle to prepare for. No plan to conceive and execute and follow through. He’d repair and keep the ESEF because it was just as useful for day-to-day tasks as it was for breaching secret labs, but there was no reason to upgrade or redesign it further. The Red Army was dead. Red Leader was dead.

But Tord was still among the living. And he had no idea what to do with that fact.
