I understand that fish are often small and simple creatures, but I cannot emphasis enough that fish can feel pain, and are much smarter than what people think.

No most are not at the level of dogs and cats, but betta fish, goldfish, catfish and similar things, are smart enough to recognize and feel pain, as well as have decent memories.

Also I don't care if a species is invasive, that doesn't give you the right in any sense to torture it.

What the actual f*ck is wrong with TikTok?! How is an account that is literally torturing fish for entertainment allowed there?! A guy called lab germ is torturing pleco fish in so many horrific ways and TikTok doesn't take down his account or many other accounts that reupload his stuff, despite claiming that they don't allow animal abuse on the platform. That's just sickening.

While researching xylophagy in animals for my previous post, I discovered this genus of catfish Panaque, some of the only xylophagous vertebrates. Their jaws are adapted to consuming wood, having spoon-shaped teeth and highly angled jaws to chisel and scrape chunks off wood. Scientists have also discovered symbiotic gut bacteria that can aid in digesting wood.

However, it is debated whether these catfish are truly xylophagous as they don't seem to gain much energy from wood or hold wood particles in their gut for very long. Instead, some believe these catfish consume wood to feed on detritus (dead organic matter) found living within or on the surface.
