"Get Away (ft. The Spirit of the Wu)" - De La Soul
It's been a good day for good releases. The Kid Daytona, Jinesis, and Sid Sriram all dropped some bangin' tapes today (stay tuned for some posts on some of those shortly). But the biggest news and quite possibly one of the best things I've woken up to in a while, was a brand new De La Soul track, "Get Away".
It's been a minute since we've heard from the magic 3 - last we got was 2012's Plug 1 & Plug 2 presents...First Serve courtesy of Plug 1 and Plug 2, and before that was the dope 2009 Nike sponsored Are You In? mixtape, produced by Flosstradamus. "Get Away" is the first single on the forthcoming De La album You're Welcome (due late Fall) and has the trio rhyming in a far out direction from their normal [de la] soul type ish. No, this time, the three plugs got their beatspiration from fellow hip-hop pioneers, Wu-Tang Clan. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Posdnuos said:
"I've always loved the 'Intro' on Disc Two of Wu-Tang Forever – this erie sample with no beat, that they only talked over," De La Soul's Posdnuos tells Rolling Stone. "I stumbled on the original sample while crate digging one day, took it straight to the lab and added drums. The feel is definitely gritty, hard and sounds like a Wu record, so out of inspirational respect, we included featuring 'The Spirit of the Wu' in the song title."
So there you have it. The Spirit of the Wu infiltrates De La Soul and the result is the dark and heavy "Get Away", a progressed and matured De La sound that is sure to keep the hip-hop veterans a relevant force to mess with.
"Me be the Jericho turnpike bandit...!"
Maseo, De La Soul's Plug 3 sat down with Tab of the Guestlist Network when here in London. Watch it here!
