my thing about asian Tim Drake or other poc headcanons for originally white characters is that people don’t necessarily need to not headcanon it, they need to headcanon it BETTER (and stop ignoring canon poc I beg of you)
part of that requires realizing that a certain pattern or idea is racist though so I guess that’s an unrealistic hope 💔💔
if you make remy human, its a story about a person who can’t communicate with the other people around him who is labeled dirty and thief and overall undesirable who also happens to be talented in terms of culinary ingenuity and creativity finally getting the chance to do what he loves by hiding his accomplishments under the identity of a white man who could easily exist in the space remy wants to. linguini in turn has the potential to be successful due to his privilege as a white guy who descends from a culinary genius, but lacks the skills or determination to since he honestly lacks a sense of identity at all.
the two of them act as foils as remy lives out his dreams through linguini and linguini to form an identity around the opportunities remy has given him. neither are truly independent of each other and neither are able to escape who they are outside of the other. remy is still a rat and linguini is still a man searching for identity and acceptance. this is further exacerbated by linguini getting to exist in the spotlight and begin forming a relationship with colette while remy is still getting no credit and feeling under appreciated.
then he and linguini fight and when they reunite, his reveal causes the other chefs to leave, feeling betrayed and disillusioned. remy doesn’t have the face of a chef and linguini doesn’t have the skill or command of one. its a low moment for the both of them because they are stripped back down to who they were apart. to who they wore before remy hid behind linguini’s mask and linguini hid behind remy’s aspirations.
i don’t think the movie goes against it’s moral by having linguini not become a chef and instead become a waiter. linguini never seemed like he dreamed or longed to be a chef in the first place. he wanted an identity and a community. he wanted to feel acknowledged and relied upon.
the moral of “not anyone can be a great artist but a great artist can come from anywhere” resonates more with colette and of course remy, especially if you read remy as a poc. especially when you consider historical connotation and think about how many innovations were made by people who never got credit for them because of their identities. especially how many get accredited to white men instead because its seen as “better branding”
I will never understand the fuss fans will make over artists recreating characters to be poc.
Almost all of these white characters have no direct cultural tie, especially in science fiction. There is no wrong to be made when one changes the color of their skin, or awards them aspects of a real life culture to go with that skin tone as long as it is done respectfully.
Like, who do you think you are, telling a person of color that they cannot use their artistic power to create a sense of belonging and positivity that you have always had, because most major characters are white?
The only thing that happens when artists recreate characters as poc is the introduction of representation, and sometimes cultural representation which the content severely lacks. It is only ever a positive thing.
And more importantly, the creator of the character and content is the only possible person who could dictate such an issue. You do not see original content creators hounding artists for providing a means to be seen to their community through the creator’s initial content.
So why should you? Think about that, and shut the fuck up.
I’m fully aware that my head cannons and other works are labeled as POC however, I can only write on things that I have experienced as a black/brown person. So most of the y/n characters are coded that way. I try to ensure that EVERYTHING I write is at least gender neutral. Also I am from the Caribbean so my knowledge of Black Culture is nowhere the same as someone from the U.S. or other countries. I would have liked to be able to write for other POC but I don’t think that it would be fair to erase what they go through because I am trying to write something with little experience. But I am trying to be as ambiguous as possible so everyone can be y/n because...isn't that the point of these anyway?
may I get some f/o x poc reader hcs? thanks a bunch dude!
x YES YOU MAY!!
🍂 I know for a fact that we poc smell wonderful no matter the background because we always have our lotions, shampoos, perfumes, the foods we cook, the incense we burn. You know the drill and you know your f/o loves it just as much as you. When they smell something that reminds them of you they get this overwhelming warm feeling. If they are out and about when it happens they have to stop and call you.
🍂 Ngl its kinda funny how your f/o forgets how curly your natural hair can get and they try to run their fingers through it. This happens a lot during moments where you two are cuddling and your f/o tries to be all cute and whatever. Then their hand is stuck but they are too embarrassed to tell you.
🍂 Then the cuddle time turns into teamwork as you go about getting their hand out of your hair.
🍂 This also leads to your f/o asking you to teach them how to do your type of hair. And even if you don’t know how, you both will sit up and watch different youtube videos. Your f/o can now style your texture hair and will happily do so if you ask.
🍂 You have made your f/o wait so you can lotion up with you are wearing anything that shows your legs, feet, arms. They tell you are fine all the time but they also know that no matter what they say you got the lotion on deck for all occasions. Not everyone can hop out the shower and go on with their day, #IRefuseToBeAshy
🍂 Extra points if your f/o is poc as well and they TOTALLY understand
🍂 Name one culture that can’t cook......that’s what I thought. Your f/o knows that if their baby wants to make a dish they are about to lay down the flames of flavours and the pleasure for the tastebuds. You do not want to eat Karan’s unseasoned mac n cheese for Thanksgiving. This has been the foundation of your relationship to the point your f/o doesn’t want to eat anyone else’s food unless it is made by you or someone in your family.
🍂 That feeling you get when your f/o picks up on your cultures characterises and elements. Your f/o wants to learn and love as much as they can not only for your sake but for theirs. Nothing screams I love you than an outsider willing to learn to feel closer to the person they love.
🍂 Dressing your f/o is clothes that relate to your race or culture. Those pictures are about to be fly as fuck.
🍂 You f/o learning the words to your favourite song, no matter the song, no matter the lyrics, no matter the language. (Even if it’s MRC Black Parade....they will learn the lyrics. Thanks Kurt)
🍂 Please wear warm/bright/pastel colours. Your f/o is still so amazed how your complexion complements the colour and not the other way around. That red outfit should be thanking you for wearing it.
🍂 Sometimes your f/o can’t help but imagine the dirtiest of things when they look at you. You as a person is already beyond this world but something so simple as the colour of your skin against theirs and how different yet similar you are takes them to a whole new experience. They want to be wrapped in your essence.
🍂 You bet your ass you teach them your native tongue with the enforcement of sex. Things will only get done if they ask you properly. And it even better if they are teaching you their native language as well.
🍂 You take your f/o to all of your family functions (if you like your family that is). Even if they have no clue what’s going on, your f/o enjoy themselves, they enjoy how exposed they get to be to a new world they know little to none about. They know that they are now apart of your family. They are loved.
