Polarity Quilt - Finish and Pattern Release!
I’m pleased to say that today I’m releasing a quilt pattern, called Polarity!
Last year, I made a quilt while learning how to sew curves. I made it in black and white and neutral colours, using high contrast as the design feature...
Since then, a few people have asked me if I had a pattern for the quilt, and I started thinking that I should just write one up! So, I did!
I’ve had the pattern in hand for a long while, and finally decided a couple weeks back to find some pattern testers and get some feedback on the draft. I got some great suggestions and edits and finished up the pattern.
In the meantime, I made another quilt using the pattern, too! Here it is: a colour version of the Polarity quilt, my quilt finish for the week!
This time, rather than use neutral colours, I chose soft pastels and bold purples that reminded me of sunsets. I was also thinking of girls who love “Disney Princesses,” but moms who don’t necessarily want to deck out their daughters’ rooms with Princess Elsa decor! :) (I’ve had visiting friends over the past few weekends who might fit that bill!)
The pattern can be used with any colour combination, or with solids or prints - it’s the contrast in value that matters for the design. There are general suggestions in the pattern on how to achieve the contrast that makes the impact.
The quilt comes together quickly because the blocks are big - each quarter circle block finishes at 10″. Since the curves are so large and gentle, it makes it a really good pattern to try curved piecing for the first time! (Honest!) The pattern includes templates to print.
I pieced the backing for this version of the quilt, too - using the scraps from the front.
I also used a “piped binding” to finish it off - my favourite kind of machine binding these days!
I’m really happy with how this quilt turned out, and how quick it was to come together! It finishes up at 48″ square, great for a baby quilt or a throw.
For the pattern, I designed two additional quilts in twin and queen sizes! I’ve already got some picked out for my queen version of this quilt.
The testers that helped me out were fantastic! Their quilts all have very different interpretations and colour schemes. I’ll have more from them this weekend to share!
If you’d like to check out the Polarity quilt pattern, it is available now on both Etsy and on Craftsy! The pattern is on sale for 25% off until September 25, 2015, no code required. (Note that the prices are slightly different between the two shops - this is because I have to use USD in Craftsy and Canadian dollars in Etsy!)
