May 22, 2020; New York, NY – Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, issued the following statement:

Mr. President, we have known for millennia that houses of worship are essential institutions. While we long to gather in person, we believe that there is no higher value than pikuach nefesh, saving a life. We are entrusted with the holy responsibility of being God’s partners in that work. The Reform Jewish Movement will continue to look to the wisdom of medical professionals to guide us on when reopening our synagogues can be done safely in keeping with our values.

Hi I’m a Pakistani ExMuslim in the US. I have been living in the US for almost a decade. I applied for asylum when I moved here for a different reason but they didn’t find my case compelling back then and put me on PD. Is it possible for me to apply because of my apostasy again? I have received some threats on Twitter because of what I say about Islam, but I don’t know if that counts as evidence since my profile is anonymous

Our response: 

Thank you for your email. If you have compelling evidence that you are an Ex-Muslim and your life is in danger, the US immigration authorities may review your application. We cannot comment on your individual circumstances nor provide you any recommendation without verifying your identity or knowing about your full history. 

If you feel your life will be genuinely in danger, you should retain every evidence that supports your application. It might be helpful to contact organisations such as PEN AMERICA or ACLU who can verify and assess your situation to help you further. 

If you feel your life is in immediate danger, you should contact your local FBI branch: https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices 

If you are a genuine Ex-Muslim and believe the US may not safeguard you, you can consider seeking asylum in Canada or the EU.
