Review: POLYDRIVE's 'Not Me Anymore' is a heart-wrenching take on a breakup single
Brothers Cole and Cam grew up producing music together, before joining together officially for duo project POLYDRIVE that they've been releasing music under since 2019. After sharing debut single 'By Design' 3 years ago, this pair have released two albums 'PRELUDE' and 'The Mixtape', as well as recently sharing their first single of 2021 'Not Me Anymore.'
Produced entirely in their bedroom, 'Not Me Anymore' is an amalgamation of lo-fi and mellow elements perfect for staring out the window and just existing in the moment. Cut from the same cloth as artists like Tame Impala, Jon Bellion and LANY the dreamscape set up within the instrumentals of this release forms an aura of reverie that's truly impenetrable. Soft guitar strums pair delicately with airy vocals, before dashing in smoothened vocal effects that only further add to this calm atmosphere.
Although incredibly soothing in sound, 'Not Me Anymore' bears a heavy-heart on it's sleeve. This breakup track takes a spin on the normal format, instead taking the perspective of the one having to break their lovers heart. Peering into the words of this beautiful release shows an inherent intimacy and rawness, with lines like: 'I wish I could change my mind, but she told me I hope you find whatever it is you're looking for 'cause it's not me anymore.' This internal push-and-pull dialogue articulates the struggles of falling out of love effortlessly, whilst giving a stage for those heartbroken lovers who are equally pained they can't love their partner way they used to.
If you're looking to chill out, or maybe even shed a tear, look no further than here to discover POLYDRIVE's serene sound and touching storytelling.
