In the pre-GPS days, this was the high tech navigation system that ships used. When you see old photos of the lighthouse station you may see the tall antenna which was part of a radio beacon system. These beacons were part of many lighthouses; #Poncelighthouse to the north and #FoweyRocksLighthouse to the south for example. Each would emit a certain Morse code signal letter 6x/hour. Hillsboro broadcast the letter “Q” which was two dashes, a dot and a dash. Ships would receive the signal and using their charts would be able to triangulate their position. It was #onthisday in 1944 that the radio beacon at #HillsboroLighthouse first began operation.
