So a little while ago my cousin and two of his friends (all three are cooks) decides to start an enterprise. They found a name - Tabula Rasa - and started thinking of concepts. They do pop-up-dinners. For them eating a meal should be more than just consuming food-like products. They wanted to connect people and make them forget their smart phones for a while. And boy, did they succeed! Their motto is “Einfach. Miteinander. Essen.” which basically means “ Simply. Eat. Together.” They started in Berlin (because that’s where they all live at the moment), had their second event on a Demeter-farm (demeter is a rather strict eco-seal) in a village in northern Germany and now started their third event which lasts about two and a half weeks in Hamburg. The ingredients they use are all locally courced and seasonal. They were successful with the first events. They spread the words among friends and family who spread it among their friends and family and so on. But today the “Hamburger Abendblatt”, the daily newspaper in Hamburg (and a little beyond) published an article about one of them (Marianus von Hörsten, he won the “Global Young Chefs Challenge” in February) and their concept and now they keep getting calls and email from complete strangers and it’s freaking awesome! This whole thing started as a little experiment and just to gather impressions, experience and also kill some time and now it’s getting bigger and bigger. If our grandpa was still alive he’d be the proudest man on this earth. He was a self-tought chef and after quitting his day job he opened a restaurant and brought the first ever Michelin-star to our town. So not only is my cousin filling in some pretty big steps of my grandfather, he is also enjoying it and he is one of the kindest persons I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I am so fucking proud of him and I am so glad to be able to call him my cousin/pretty-much-brother. They’re in town until september 2nd.
