Porsche IMS Bearing: What Owners and Buyers Still Get Wrong
The Porsche IMS bearing remains one of the most misunderstood reliability issues affecting water-cooled Porsche engines, particularly the 1997–2008 Boxster, Cayman, and 911 models. Despite years of discussion, two major problems persist today: many new owners are still unaware the issue exists at all, and many others do not realize that most IMS bearings have a service interval, unless a permanent solution was installed.
The intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing supports the timing chain drive inside Porsche’s M96 and M97 engines. When it fails, the result is often catastrophic engine damage with little warning. While Porsche updated the bearing design multiple times, none of the factory solutions eliminated the risk entirely.
A common source of confusion is failure rate statistics. Many online discussions still quote figures derived from the Eisen class action lawsuit, which relied on data that is now decades old. Those numbers reflected a much younger vehicle population. Today, these cars are significantly older, have higher mileage, and are operating well beyond their original design assumptions. As a result, real-world failure rates are not static—they increase with age, time, and use.
Another misconception is that “no symptoms” means “no risk.” IMS bearings frequently fail without advance warning, and oil changes alone cannot prevent mechanical bearing degradation. Cars that have survived this long without failure are not immune; they are simply further along the timeline.
Just as critical is the misunderstanding around replacements. Many upgraded IMS bearings—particularly ceramic hybrid retrofits—do not last forever. They require periodic replacement at defined mileage or time intervals. Only a true pressure-fed plain bearing conversion, commonly referred to as an IMS Solution, removes the service interval entirely.
For used Porsche buyers, an undocumented IMS bearing is a risk factor that should be treated as unresolved, regardless of mileage. For current owners, assuming the issue was “already handled” without documentation can be an expensive mistake.
The takeaway is simple: the Porsche IMS bearing is not a historical problem—it is an ongoing ownership consideration. Understanding whether the bearing has been addressed, how it was addressed, and whether it has a service interval is essential to protecting the engine and the value of the car.
