Spiral staircase in the north-west corner Porchester Castle keep (Hampshire, England). Porchester Castle was probably founded in the 11th century, and came under royal control in 1154.
The domestic quarters of medieval castles had no internal corridors, apart from kitchen passages and those created by screens. Instead, rooms opened into each other, or were joined by spiral staircases, which maximized space.
