Fred Allen and Portland Hoffa (Radio Mirror, May 1938)
Fred Allen: Well, come on, come on, Portland, what are you laughing at?
Portland Hoffa: This sign.
Fred Allen: Sign, what sign?
Portland Hoffa: "This stationery store is moving."
Fred Allen: So?
Portland Hoffa: Well, if it's a stationary store, how can it move?
Showbiz columnist Maurice Zolotow praised comedian Fred Allen with pretentious and disgusting language:
“His larynx manufactures humor as effortlessly as the human liver secretes bile,” he said. “And the words ... are original and imaginative discharges of hostility through the linguistic zone.”
Popular CBS radio comedy program "The Fred Allen Show" premiered #OnThisDay in 1932. Allen co-starred with his wife Portland Hoffa and show had many titles during its 17-year run starting with “The Linit Bath Club Review.” Later moved to NBC.
