Tribute to Stanisław Ignacy 'WITKACY' Witkiewicz "IMAGO: The History Of Portraits" 18th JULY - 4th NOVEMBER 2018 Show curated by Elisabetta Pajer IMAGO is a show dedicated to the history of portrait: over 30 artists from five different continents are invited to pay homage and interpret a portrait in their medium of their choice. IMAGO aims to lead visitors through different artistic eras, helping discover the international history and evolution of the portrait. 'My participation in ‘IMAGO’ exhibition in Museum Of Urban and Contemporary Art is a kind of tribute to this great but still underestimated artist. I’ve decided to interpret one of his ‘ chemical portraits’ series - painting titled „Azot, Fosfor, Arsen” („Nitrogen Arsenic Phosphorus”). Exactly 100 years later (painting by Witkacy was done in 1918) I’m fallowing the same rules of ”Pure Form”, marking on the back of the canvas all the substances I’ve taken while creating the portraits. Witkacy was very active on various creative fields setting out his principles in New Forms in Painting and Introduction to the Theory of Pure Form in the Theatre. He was definately a real revolutionary of his times, creating cutting – edge theatre plays as well as innovative and pioneering paintings. He had begun to support himself through portrait painting combined with research on one's own psyche and perception abilities. For his “portrait painting firm,” Witkiewicz established rules and types for his portrait work, marking the paintings and pastels with corresponding symbols and abbreviations of the substances he had either taken or, in the case of alcohol and nicotine, not taken at the time. Type C were created under the influence of alcohol and “narcotics of a superior grade” to produce abstract compositions he called “Pure Form.” A variety of drugs and their combinations were taken to produce a variety of distortions and effects, and often this would be the portrait subject’s choice.' #art #artwork #sepe #mixedmedia #fineart #muca #painting #posprints (ved Munich, Germany)
