Courtney Nicole Googe
Courtney’s experience as the child of a US Navy engineer has been a great influence in her work. The constant moving around, typically from one coastal town to another, meant she couldn’t claim a hometown, but she could claim to be from the water (the only constant element!).
Her first foray into animation speaks to this origin story. Twenty-six relief prints (“rainbow” rolled) were used to create the stop-motion background of the waves and clouds, while the octopus arms, houses, and rocks are cut-out prints that were then layered on top. The sound of the wind and the waves Courtney recorded from the beach in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, one of her many coastal towns.
