Day 21, Three Forks, MT to Powell Junction, ID - (2) states (MT, ID), 226 miles, 4 hrs (plus 1 1/2 hrs @ Traveler's Rest, MT)
One more beautiful drive through western Montana. We just love the landscapes of this state - we never tire of enjoying the scenery in Montana. It has to be among the most beautiful in our amazing country!
We took time from our travels to make a stop at Traveler's Rest just outside of Missoula, MT. This is a state park at the site where the Lewis & Clark expedition (1805 - 1807) stopped in their exploration of the Louisiana Purchase to rest and prepare for their trek over the Bitterroots. Very nice visitor's center and we enjoyed the self-guided walk around the camp. Beautiful spot!
Lolo Pass (5233'), about 33 miles up the mountain from Traveler's Rest is where you cross from Montana to Idaho on Hwy 12. The drive from Traveler's Rest up to the pass is so peaceful as you ride up and down curving left and right with heavily wooded (tall Ponderosa Pines) rising steeply on both sides. You can smell the peace with the Lochsa River running along side the road. Another 13 miles pass the state border was our home for the evening at Powell Campground. As it turns out, Lewis & Clark stopped in this same area back in 1805.
Did you know? Tom Ambrose (Band of Brothers) recently wrote a novel detailing the Lewis & Clark Expedition - Undaunted Courage. I'm told its well worth a read.
Our campsite for the night was a lovely spot in the middle of the forest. Reminds us a lot of one of our favorites back in North Carolina - Davidson River. High temps were around 80F with lows in the mid 50's. We walked down to the river and put our feet in the water - no surprise, it's cold! The mountains come right down to the river's edge. Electrical sites are all full, so we settle for no utilities - not a problem, we have onboard electrical and water. Plus it will make for a quick start in the morning!
The drive included going right through the heart of Missoula, MT - home to the University of Montana. Unfortunately, we were not able to stop this time. Next time, we can check out what looks like a fun town to explore - many restaurants and shops in a beautiful environment.
