my birthday: but make it a beautiful disaster

today at work, my coworkers excitedly congratulated me on my birthday and proceeded to gift me with a very pretty birthday cake one of them had personally taken the time during the day to make. i work in a restaurant&bar, he’s one of the chefs, trust me when i said it looked super tasty. 

i say looked, because i don’t actually have any idea what it tasted like. 

you see, they forgot to ask me one very important thing before all of this: they forgot to ask me if i have any food allergies.. 

..which i very much do.

so i stare in shock as i get presented with this super pretty cake and thank all the lads for congratulating me, and i’m mentally going “how do i ask if they know about my allergies? because i don’t think they Know? how do i tell them? how do i say it?? do i just eat it and perish on the spot to not have to tell them?” i was delighted that they put in the thought and effort, but feeling So Bad about not being able to appreciate it.

before i could make a move, the one who made the cake comes up to me and he says: “i made it just for you! 😊 i hope you don’t have any allergies..”

and i look him in the eyes, my eyes filled despair, and i say: “but i do.”

there’s this pause, where i see him take in my words. i see the horror on his face. he softly asks what i’m allergic to. i tell him: wheat and dairy. he looks at his creation, his beautiful chocolate cake with cream. the cake that Definitely has wheat and dairy in it. and he sighs. i start giggling.

one of my bosses comes over, he’s definitely the one that arranged it and made sure i was going to get celebrated. he smiles and asks what i thought about the cake, i’m about to answer but my coworker beats me to it. he says: “well she wouldn’t know, considering she’s allergic to it.”

the same look of horror and disbelief appears on the face of my boss. he looks at me, asks “You have allergies??” and i nod. those two share a look of despair and i can see the embarrassment kicking in at this point. i start laughing harder. 

they clear their throats. one of them goes. “actually you see, you’re just meant to look at it. it’s decoration.”, the other one says, “no it’s for a guest actually.” the best take on it was “it’s actually not dairy or wheat in it, this is 100% pressed cacao and paint.” at this point we’re all laughing at the situation.

another coworker comes over, he’s one of the bartenders. he’s told about the situation, wheezes and offers to pour me a shot instead. my boss, in defeat, says: “she doesn’t drink either.”

after a while they decide that they’re at least going to sing “happy birthday” to me. we’re all still working, in the middle of a shift, so someone keeps running away when they’ve almost gathered everyone. finally, this group of awkward but well-meaning men are gathered around me. they sing probably one of the worst renditions of happy birthday i’ve ever heard, and i can only watch on with a massive smile on my face.

you know when people say it’s the thought that counts? yeah, without a doubt. this definitely is one of my favorite birthday celebrations ever. i’ll take a real good story over a nice cake (that i can eat) any day.

also, after some arguing over who was going to get to eat the cake, i slide it over to another coworker. he says it’s really good. with a satisfied nod, i get back to work.

ngl i have a pretty neat workplace and very sweet coworkers.
