Great things are in motion excited to share! Betty's Daughter Arts Collaborative is excited to welcome eleven educators, activists, artists, and healers to participate in our 2018 Public Performance Art Fellowship. For the last three years, BDAC has dedicated the Public Performance Art Fellowship to creative emancipation because our community feels the weight of the current political moment. We are living in a moment that reminds many of us of the ongoing and tireless work of our ancestors and elders. The work of upending mass incarceration, the school to prison pipeline, regressive immigration, reproductive justice, and health care policies requires stamina, creativity, wellness and community. As BDAC moves into year three of our creative emancipation focus, we are deepening our commitment to creative emancipation through a lens of practical magic, cultural conjure, resilience, evolution, and transformation. We are looking to build a bridge from trauma to triumph as an artistic, political, and collaborative act. Between April and October, fellows will study womanist/black feminist experimental performance, ritual poetics, and performance as public practice. With the support of our faculty and community partners, the fellows will build solo performances and participate in the development of Ebony Noelle Golden's 125th & FREEdom, a durational performance ritual exploring migration, gentrification, and cultural resilience which is slated for a June 2019 world premiere. The fellows will also create original work and participate in The Homecoming, a solo performance art festival. Additionally, fellows will support community-engaged, creative encounters with Harlem-based community organizations. Welcome to the fellowship: Babay Angles (2nd Yr), Cynthia Renta, Rochelle Jamila, Kolenge Fonge, Treva Ellison, Jehan Roberson (2nd Yr), Sara Abdullah (2nd Yr), Mshairi Siyanda (3rd Yr), Marena Faith Blanchard, Reanna Roane, and Clarivel Ruiz. Stay tuned to what the fellowship is up to by following the #PPA2018 on social media or Betty's Daughters Arts Collaborative. #clarivelruiz #performanceart #125thandfreedom #blackart #emancipation #conjure #ritual #fugitivity
