PHRASAL VERBS #1: Break Down

Phrasal verbs are very common in English, especially in informal contexts. They can have more than one meaning, like in this picture. Study the different meanings of "break down", then check the answer.

Break down can have the following meanings:

If a machine or vehicle breaks down, it stops working: My car broke down.

If a system, relationship or discussion breaks down, it fails because there is a problem or disagreement: Let's break it down.

It can also mean to be unable to control your feelings and to start to cry: I'm having a mental break down.

But only used to can refer to past states. Compare:

And we use used to, not would, to talk about regular and important habitual behaviour.
