Paraty, Brazil Paraty is a small fishing town situated on the Green Coast at the most southern tip of Rio de Janeiro state with a cute historic centre, cobbled streets, and multicolored colonial houses. It is surrounded by lush green jungle which makes it the perfect base to go chasing waterfalls. To find them you can simply follow the Caminho do Ouro, or Gold Trail, which was laid by slave made people to transport gold in the 17th-19th centuries. Right at the beginning there's the Poço do Inglês (the ‘Well of the English’), a dipping pool with dripping vines and a swing rope to play Tarzan on. Out of the four waterfalls that we (hitch-)hiked to, my favourite was Cachoeira do Tobogã because it forms a natural water slide. Who needs human-made water parks if nature provides even greater challenges, right?

Angra Dos Reis, Brazil The coast of Angra dos Reis with its 365 islands and over 2,000 beaches is situated just below Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately we got caught up in some really bad weather while we were there so we couldn't really enjoy the beaches and stayed more in the city and the rainforest since the trees provided shelter from the rain.
