Took a class a couple years ago where we did some experimental animations...so here's a Carton head-bounce (because of course) on something called a praxinoscope!

Cirquetober day 4: Praxinoscope from "Iris".

This time we wanted to try a pin-up style! Something with glitter, and flashes, and old film, just very Old Hollywood!

The praxinoscope was invented by Charles-Emile Reynaud in 1877. The device uses a paper ribbon and a mirror to create a short animation.

In this video I draw a short looping animation for my Praxinoscope optical kit. First I make a series of drawings of an old toy robot walking. I then use Adobe Photoshop to create a disc template and position each drawing onto the template. I then print the disc out and insert it into my Praxinoscope to see the animated results.

What is a Praxinoscope? A praxinoscope is a simple animation device similar to a zoetrope. Invented in 1877, it improved on the zoetrope by replacing the narrow viewing slits with a multi-faceted mirror. When you look at the mirror whilst the outer disc is spinning you see a series of images in rapid succession giving the illusion of motion. Cool!

An animation from a couple years back. Its only 12 frames because I used it on an animation device called a praxinoscope. I really need to upload some footage of that sometime. It’s a disc with the frames printed on it, and in the center is a bunch of tilted mirrors and it creates and animation.
