The newly announced Startup Weekend Next initiative involving Steve Blank and Startup Weekend is big news for first time entrepreneurs.
SW Next is being structured as a four-week “pre-accelerator” course that is intended to help entrepreneurs create, refine, and test business models with help from volunteer mentors. The program is a natural continuation point for teams emerging out of Startup Weekends that are looking to continue to pursue their startup idea.
Prior to the launch of SW Next, for the most part SW teams were left on their own to figure out next steps and keep the ball rolling. This addresses that gap by incorporating aspects of Blank's online Lean LaunchPad course and further complements it with coaches & mentors from the TechStars and Startup America network.
BTW, if there is not a SW Next session planned for your area in the coming months, I would highly recommend taking Steve Blank's online course (it's free). In addition, you should consider picking up his book (The Startup Owners Manual) as well as Alexander Osterwalder's Business Model Generation.
I've gotten to know Steve as well as Marc Nager and the Startup Weekend organization over the years. I have a ton of respect for what they do and this is a great combo that will deliver a lot of value for first time entrepreneurs looking to best understand how to further validate and build upon their idea.
UPDATE - 03Nov12: Here is a post by Steve Blank on more of the genesis and background on the Startup Weekend Next initiative.
