Hooo Boy
Deanna couldn’t sleep, the woman tossing and turning in her bed for what felt like forever, though it was probably only about half an hour. She rolled over towards the nightstand with a grunt, hand reaching out and groping around for her phone for a minute before she managed to grasp it. Turning the screen on and squinting her eyes against the harsh light, the digital display read that it was only around two in the morning. The hunter let out a pathetic whine and let the phone back down to rest against the table top, Deanna rolling onto her back as she stared up at the ceiling for maybe two, three minutes. Her brain just wouldn’t shut up, her muscles wouldn’t loosen and allow her to melt into dreams.
Eventually getting tired of her pathetic attempts, she sat up, swinging her legs over the side of the mattress and planting her feet on the floor. Deanna let out a soft sigh, before she was getting up and stretching, another grunt of dissatisfaction leaving her; she just felt awful all around.
Deanna headed for the door then, hand grasping the knob and turning it, the woman’s sock-clad feet padding against the cold floor. She soon found herself in the kitchen, opening up the fridge and ignoring the blaring light, grabbing herself a glass of water. She leaned back against the counter, gulping down the liquid and tossing the cup into the sink. One more sigh slipped from her lips, Deanna heading back down the hallway until she reached the door to her brother’s room. She tossed about an idea in her head, debating with herself, before she finally pushed it open, checking to see if Sam was asleep yet; he was often up late on his laptop, doing whatever research. Surprisingly, he was asleep, his chest rising and falling softly. She watched him for a moment, before closing the door quietly behind her as she stepped into the room. Trying to be gentle and not waken him, she lifted the sheets, crawling up onto the mattress and she spooned up behind him, burying her face against his back for warmth, just as Sam had done to her when he was little and sought comfort from his big sister. The familiar scent of Sam filled her senses, and Deanna thought that perhaps she could fall asleep quickly this way.
