Can anyone suggest a reasonable source on shore employment for RN personnel in the 18th c? Support for the Fleet looks like it might be useful, but the nearest copy to me is at Stanford.
e: basically i’m wondering to what extent half-pay lieutenants were offered minor official posts (especially outside the impress service) and whether it signified the end of a sea career if they accepted (in the way that an appointment as, say, a commissioner of the navy board for a senior post-captain would have.) appointments to dockyards don’t seem to have negatively impacted the sea-going futures of senior warrant officers — am i correct in saying that?
i suppose another way to approach this question is: how many employees at the admiralty (etc) had seen active service at sea?
