Interview with a Press Operator
Last year I got the chance to interview a press Operator at Cober Printing I thought I would share it with you. The Person I interviewed preferred not to be anonymous.
1. Where have you worked? And how many years have you been working as a press operator?
"I've worked at All print Ainsworth. And now for Cober printing. Ive worked in this profession for 19 years."
2.What kind of printing do you do?
"I do many kinds of printing, but primarily Offset printing."
3. What are your dislikes and likes of printing?
"I love everything about it! What I don't like is doing special colour printing. There are minor things too that I don't like, but I don't mind it. "
4. Favourite Part?
"Challenges. I love to do high quality jobs. And challenging the Graphic Designers. [he-he] "
5. What was the first press you operated?
"GTO One Colour. Mostly prints small things like envelopes, letterheads that sort of thing. Then from there I started to do a bit of the letterhead."
6. Did you always know this is what you wanted to do?
"No, I went to school for Architecture. But when I came to Canada I got the opportunity to learn this Career. I never actually went to school for this, I learned from scratch."
7. Easy and hardest thing to do?
"Easiest the big jobs, Once its all set up then there's nothing for me to do. The hardest is the very large images, small photos and crossovers.
8. Finally, What would you encourage other people to do? The people who are looking to get into this career.
"Printing looks very easy, but its hard to do. You need to know a lot and be able to handle tough situations. It is a well paid job. And as it's starting to become a lot more digital so make sure you have a handle on that too."
