Preston Jackson’s sculpture Knockin’ on Freedom’s Door at the site of the Pettengill House Underground Railroad stop near what used to be the intersection of Liberty and Jackson, Peoria, Illinois. The sculpture appears to represent two things. One, the long, lean, somewhat stooping figure of Abraham Lincoln. Two, the road north, on which we see figures of people helping each other to escape from slavery. In this interpretation, Lincoln’s face, solicitously gazing south at the scenes along the road, seems to represent the North Star https://ordinaryphilosophy.com/2017/10/24/photobook-knockin-on-freedoms-door-at-moses-and-lucy-pettingills-house-site-in-peoria-illinois/ #undergroundrailroad #abrahamlincoln #peoria #prestonjackson #prestonjacksonsculpture #northstar (at Peoria, Illinois)

A dark and silent auditorium...a well worn stage...and tattered curtains...this is our theatre...a silence over the crowd...a sea of blood shot eyes with vacant stares...a volley of whispers...be still...the show must begin...an altered reality and with view askew...the ghosts of memories ever lingering...softly caressing...Languid...seduced by a gentle breeze...a sleek and delicate line...the actors play out their lines...word for word and note by note...and gentle action with silent subtleties...back to the story...our minds silent and selective...cool and collected...silence in the audience...in and amongst a comprehensive love affair...the show goes on...the end is certainly near...the curtain is drawn...the stage...our own reality...blood sweat and tears...and maybe it’s just amongst ourselves a little volley of cheers a couple of smiles and the sound of laughter...the little things we will most certainly remember...
