Yasir was minding his own business as he walked through the busy marketplace. As usual, he had little to no money to actually buy anything. He’d done some different, strange jobs to earn some extra coins to purchase himself some actual food for once, which almost never happened. It was how life had been for Yasir since he was a child. He couldn’t even remember a time when he’d been able to afford food, and he’d been living with his mother for his entire life and trying to take care of her ever since she became sick years ago. He found himself standing at a stand with fresh fruit, and he was so used to stealing these items that it felt strange handing over coins to the man and taking the food with him without having to worry about being arrested.
As he turned around, he couldn’t help but hear a loud commotion from nearby. A young woman was being threatened by the guards for stealing food. At first, he was going to ignore it and go back to his home, but there was something about the young woman that made him interested in what was happening. Walking over, Yasir interrupted the yelling of the guards. “Sorry, I’m so sorry. I told her not to do anything without me, but here she is, always ignoring instructions,” he told them. He reached into his pocket to pay them off for whatever she had taken, but quickly realized he didn’t have nearly enough money for, well, anything. He only had one little coin left he couldn’t purchase really anything in this market with that coin. “Here. This should cover everything,” he said, handing the seller the little baggy he had. He grabbed onto the woman’s hand and started walking away with her before they could notice that there wasn’t enough in the bag. “Act normal until we round the corner, and then you’re gonna have to run,” he whispered in her ear.
As soon as they turned the corner, he heard the guards yelling. “Run!” he said quietly as he tightly held onto her hand and began running with her. He knew these streets better than anything else, and he was used to running away from the guards and hiding in the different buildings. Yasir knew of different crevices to hide in, but he wasn’t sure if there was enough space for two people to hide. He rounded different corners with her, holding onto her tightly as he ran away from the guards chasing them. The two ended up in a large crowd and he looked around, slowing his pace and trying to blend in with all the people. “Act normal. We’re trying to get to the other side of the street,” he told her. He slowed his pace and would glance around at times at the different vendors, while keeping his eyes on the guards who were still running through the crowd looking for them. “Go, go!” he said quickly as he began speedwalking to the other side of the street away from the guards who began to notice the two of them. He finally found his favorite hiding spot and ducked in with her. It was an abandoned building that was falling apart, and luckily for him, that meant there were places in the walls he could hide into where no one would ever notice him. He crouched down and put his hand over her mouth, making sure she didn’t make a single sound. Yasir watched as the guards began walking through the building, looking everywhere for the two of them. He held his breath when a guard came closer to the hiding spot and he could only pray that they wouldn’t be seen. At the sound of shouting, the guard turned away and began running through the building because they believed they had seen the two thieves running out into the streets. He waited a few more seconds, his hand still over her mouth, before he finally let out a breath and let go of her. “We should be fine,” Yasir said. “They’re not really bright.”
