When they find the retired Thanos in the beginning, Thanos explains how he no longer has the stones and mid-way his bullshit talking Thor beheads him. The team was life, wtf was that?? And Thor, with a distraught look on his face says, “I went for the head…”

This was when he realised…hope was lost.

After the time jump, he and the surviving Asgardians rebuild their lives in the countryside (I think they shot this in Ireland from the looks of it). The team finds him hiding in his home with Korg and Miek (a pleasure to watch as always) playing video games. His hair is long and messy, his beard fully grown out and unkempt, and his body entirely out of shape. He held a full beer belly because that was the only thing he has been consuming for the past five years.

He continues to be hopeless and distraught until he travels back in time with Rocket to retrieve the stone from Jane and accidentally bumps into his mother. He pours his soul out to her and she offers some advice, and I guess that was the motivation he needed to get back in the game.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s not the same Thor he was before IW, and I don’t think he ever will be. At the end, he passes the Asgard crown to Valkyrie and goes back into space, joining the Guardians of the Galaxy, to find another path.

(Well a lot of people seem to think that the Children of Thanos are actually his adopted children like Nebula and Gamora, but actually the word ‘Children’ here is used to mean ‘Disciples’ or “Followers’ and they call him ‘Father’ like one would refer to their God. 

The Children of Thanos is a cult who revere and worship Thanos, but I think only Proxima sees Thanos as a paternal figure. The rest just serve him. That is why Proxima and Corvus are married, they are not siblings and Thanos did not adopt them. They met through serving Thanos. He did officiate their wedding and perform the ceremony though since he was the only higher authority they respected.)
