Royce Da 5′9″ - Book of Ryan ALBUM REVIEW

Just days after the release of PRhyme 2 in March, Royce Da 5′9″ announced the release of his Book Of Ryan album. As much as I love Royce, I feel that he isn’t giving people enough time between projects. I’m still digesting PRhyme 2, all 17 tracks of it. Royce has done shit like this before. Just weeks before the release of their Shady debut, Slaughterhouse released a mixtape called On The House. Also, Royce dropped his Trust The Shooter mixtape weeks before his Layers album dropped. His last album, Layers, was Royce’s most introspective work to date when it dropped in 2016. Layers is probably Royce’s best solo album since Street Hop in my opinion. Book Of Ryan was announced by Royce to be even more introspective than Layers, which included crazy stories like Tabernacle and Misses. I have to say that Book Of Ryan is a very good album. There is a ton to unpack on this album though. After I had my first full listen through, I realized I had a lot more listening to do to fully understand everything. Only on his solo albums, Royce has had very questionable production choices but the beats on this album were good overall (with the exception of Legendary). Songs like Woke and Dumb totally slap. So does Caterpillar. Eminem snapped on that track. My question is why wasn’t Em rapping like this on his last album? The whole concept of this album is that Royce’s son is writing a paper about him called the Book Of Ryan and Royce is telling him stories about his childhood. I thought that was super creative. The best thing about this album is easily Royce’s storytelling. Like I mentioned, Tabernacle and Misses are perfect examples of why Royce’s storytelling is such a treat and he tells stories on this one. I noticed that the stories on Layers were more about Royce as an adult but Book Of Ryan’s stories are mostly about him as a kid. Cocaine was such a heartbreaking story. The song is about Royce seeing his father go through cocaine addiction. He then connects his father’s addiction to his alcoholism that he went through as an adult. I may have said this in my PRhyme 2 review but Royce actually has a very good singing voice. He also sang well on PRhyme 1 deluxe and one of the Slaughterhouse mixtapes as well. On the chill Boblo Boat, Royce recalls good family trips, the time he lost his virginity and the time he tried alcohol for the first time. J. Cole had a great dope verse too. I liked how he interpolates First Of The Month by Bone Thugs in his part and one of the tracks on the album is called First Of The Month. Royce also recalls what went on in his neighborhood as a kid on Amazing. Power gave me chills when I heard it for the first time and I still get them when I listen to it. The beat and the first little parts of the verses sound like something Eminem would do on his songs. The stories Royce tells about the holidays are quite vivid and they are some of the best verses on the entire album. The beat is perfect for these stories. Something that’s made Royce a unique lyricist is that when he’s storytelling, he’ll seem like he’s going off beat to start talking but he stays rapping and is perfectly on beat. He did that on Tabernacle and does the same on Power. Summer On Lock seriously slapped. Pusha T’s hook was dope as fuck, I wish he had a verse. Jadakiss and Fabolous should’ve been rapping over beats like that one for Friday On Elm Street. It would’ve been good if they picked beats like Summer On Lock. Yes, I do like this album quite a bit. It’s one of Royce’s best solo albums like I said. I do have some complaints about it though. Yes, this album is 21 tracks long and I do hate long albums but the length actually wasn’t a problem for me. It didn’t seem like 1 hour and 11 minutes. The main thing that did bother me was the tracklisting and sequencing. If Royce wanted to make a cohesive story about Book Of Ryan and telling his son stories from his childhood, he should’ve started the album with the Who Are You skit, made the storytelling tracks the album and put the tracks without stories onto maybe a Trust The Shooter 2 (like what he did with Layers). I do love the non-storytelling tracks like Woke, Dumb and Caterpillar but they didn’t make sense to the concept. The concept was probably meant to be a loose concept but I think it would’ve made more sense to make a strict concept. Also, Protecting Ryan was such an interesting story but Royce just talked and didn’t actually rap it and I really wish he did because it would’ve been better as a song. There aren’t many filler tracks on this album, only just towards the end they start to appear. I did listen to the Caterpillar remix with Logic and I did find it somewhat disappointing. Logic and Royce have made an awesome track together but Logic’s verse was pretty underwhelming. He had the perfect opportunity to really flow but he didn’t. Book Of Ryan is super dope.

PRhyme - PRhyme 2 ALBUM REVIEW

The last PRhyme project was crazy. It was 9 tracks of pure greatness. Just dope beats from one of my favorite producers of all time and incredible bars from one of the most underrated rappers ever. PRhyme was such a unique project because DJ Premier sampled only 1 artist on it, Adrian Younge. For PRhyme 2, Preemo samples music from Antman Wonder. I feel like he didn’t have to explain that on the intro for this new album, people should just do their homework. The first single for this PRhyme 2 was Era featuring Dave East. When I first heard it, I wasn’t feeling the beat and I thought the hook was pretty shitty. Dave and Royce were killing it though. Now, I really like the song. I needed to get used to the beat, Dave and Royce’s verses are dope. The hook could’ve been done better but it doesn’t bother me anymore. I was confused on why Black History was put on PRhyme 2. The track was on Royce’s Trust The Shooter mixtape, which came out in 2016. I don’t know why it was put on the album. The track after that, 1 Of The Hardest, would’ve been a perfect intro to the album. Royce instantly started killing it. The beat is so hard. Respect My Gun was a good track. Roc Marciano had a great verse as expected. WOW really had me excited. WOW has some great scratching from Premier. Yelawolf really killed it. Sunflower Seeds is one of my favorite tracks on this album. It has one of the best hooks. It also has one of my favorite beats on the album. When I saw that Novel was featured, I thought it said Noveliss (from Clear Soul Forces) and that had me mad excited. Sunflower Seeds is a fantastic song. Streets At Night was yet again another great track. I liked the line, “I exhibit Logic like the rappers without Chance, that’s all independant.” Rock It was also great. Rock It was the single that had me really excited to listen to this album. Rapsody’s verse on Loved Ones is probably the best rapper feature verse on the album (sorry Roc, sorry K.R.I.T., sorry Yelawolf). My Calling was cool. Made Man was a great track. Big K.R.I.T. sounded great and Denaun Porter’s hook was really great. Flirt has a great beat and 2 Chainz had a very good verse. Everyday Struggle would’ve been a good closer to this album. It’s not that Do Ya Thang and Gotta Love It were bad, it’s that they didn’t need to be the ending tracks. I wasn’t feeling CeeLo’s part on Gotta Love It. I do love this project a lot, but not as much as the first PRhyme. DJ Premier did a great job on both albums but I prefer the Adrian Younge samples over the Antman Wonder samples personally. Also, this album could’ve been trimmed down a lot. Also, I was hoping for a Slaughterhouse track to be the closer. We haven’t heard Slaugterhouse since Microphone Preem and RNS. On PRhyme 2, Royce and Premier are killing it just as expected.
