Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Are Spending Their First Engagement Anniversary Apart
It’s been exactly one year since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their royal engagement to the world — and its been a whirlwind 365 days!
The couple tied the knot in a fairy tale ceremony in May, attended several royal family events over the summer, embarked on their first major royal tour together this fall and announced they are expecting their first child in the spring.
But the newlyweds are spending the first anniversary of their historic engagement apart, as Harry concludes his two-day visit to Zambia on Tuesday. The 34-year-old royal, who has spoken about his love for Africa and has made several visits there with the Duchess of Sussex, is in Zambia on behalf of the Commonwealth (he’s the youth ambassador of the family of nations linked to the U.K.) and to meet with conservation group African Parks, of which he is president.
Harry made the trip solo, while Meghan, who is in her second trimester, remained at home, where she is busy preparing for the couple’s big move to Windsor.
The newlyweds are moving out of their home at Kensington Palace (where Prince William and Kate Middleton also live with their three children), and into Windsor Castle’s Frogmore Cottage, which is on the same grounds where their evening wedding party was held and where their engagement photos were taken last year.
Windsor, located about 30 miles west of London, is a “special place” for the couple, their spokesman says — and was, of course, the setting for their wedding in May.
Upon their engagement announcement last year, Harry’s father, Prince Charles, released the following statement via his office of Clarence House.
“His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle became engaged in London earlier this month. Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms. Markle’s parents.
The announcement was a historic one as it marked the first time a direct heir to the throne had been set to wed an American since King Edward VIII abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson in 1937. (Harry is sixth in line, behind his father, Prince Charles, William and Kate’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.)
Soon after their engagement was announced, the couple released a stunning set of official portraits taken at Frogmore House on the grounds of Windsor Castle to celebrate the happy news.
During their high-speed, long-distance courtship, Harry and Meghan spent time together at each other’s respective homes in London and Toronto, where Meghan filmed Suits. They then made their home together at Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace, where they have lived for the past year.
Harry and Meghan are now ready to start a new chapter in their new home, which they’ll move into “early next year,” PEOPLE confirms.

"The [Queen’s] corgis took to you [Meghan] straight away. I’ve spent the last 33 years being barked at. This one walks in, absolutely nothing … Just wagging tails and I was just like ugh.” ~ Prince Harry

Is Prince Harry really a feminist? According to his fiancée, Meghan Markle, the former Club H honker is indeed the new Germaine Greer. He has a fully open mind when it comes to women or, as he might once have described them, though not now, “hot totty” with “full-fat milkers”. She was a feminist, Markle told someone in the crowd during a recent trip to Wales, “and he’s a feminist too, so there’s that”.
Harry’s “personal journey” from Nazi uniforms to Nelson Mandela is fast becoming one of the most touching and real royal narratives of our times. It’s genuinely mesmerising, watching him go, Candide-like, from lost jarhead to sub-Obaman fully woke dude with a hot humanitarian girlfriend. Part of the fun, of course, is the sheer level of delusion exhibited not only by Harry but by Meghan.
God, I loved her “ethical” look in Wales, didn’t you? Arriving in Cardiff last Thursday, our first truly political princess had pulled together an entire outfit composed of “diplomatic” pieces — it was the UN of walkabout gear. In a nod to Wales, she wore something frighteningly described as “Welsh jeans”. In a nod to small children in the Third World, she carried a “socially conscious” handbag. In a nod to women, she wore tastefully mismatched earrings, one of which was from a brand that believes in “empowering women to follow their own passion and journey to self-love”. In a nod to animals, she wore a “cruelty-free” coat by Stella McCartney, a vegetarian.
Even more excitingly, she had somehow “forgotten” the usual stifling protocol, the rules that mean she must hobble a few feet behind the prince. She allowed people to kiss her hand and even take selfies. At one point, Harry encouraged a whole group of children to crowd around her in a “group hug”.
Such a natural scene will have come as a stab to the heart for the Duchess of Cambridge, who had tried, awkwardly, to connect with a group of children at a primary school in London only the day before. In what will now be known as the Royal Hug Wars, Meghan greeted the Welsh children with all the spontaneity of a Disney heroine discovering a surprise flock of panting bluebirds, while Kate attempted to pull a full Jacob Rees-Mogg by stiffly shaking hands with each of the children, only for them to abandon protocol and fling themselves at her.
I don’t blame Kate for this but I do blame William, a big glum spoon who doesn’t like his wife looking into the cameras or relaxing on visits. William is the true normcore face of the royals. He knows royalty isn’t a handbag that recalls the suffering of the Muslims in Burma or a pair of cloppy knee-high boots that will save the oceans. It isn’t your love of dogs or calligraphy, or whatever Meghan brings up in interviews. It’s Prince William meeting 10m people against his will and never, ever getting better at it.
I wonder how long it will take Meghan to discover how truly drudging it all is. That when it comes to freedom of anything, the royals are not traditionally “cool and chill”, or whatever Harry has claimed they are. Far from a lifelong pussy-hatter, Harry is in fact a key member of one of western civilisation’s most successful hereditary closed shops, so anti-women that no matter how hard you work, or how talented you are, you can only sleep your way in.
Royalty is unfair; it is based on unfairness; it is founded on the principle that some people are princes and everyone else is a pleb.
Still, I cannot wait for Meghan’s fabulous visits to palaces in Saudi Arabia, where the royals are so into equality they will only talk to other royals. She could use the opportunity to bring up human rights or the treatment of women or the atrocities in Yemen, just as I’m sure previous royal envoys — noted equalities dude Prince “Ideas Factory” Andrew, for example — did. It will be fun seeing her meet arms dealers and far-right dictators, anyone who has a whole section on their Wikipedia page dedicated to “accusations of corruption”. She will definitely enjoy the fully open minds of all the top military brass and, of course, the unforgettable African archbishops. They’re all feminists, absolutely.
In fact, I can’t think of anyone she’ll meet who won’t have unpalatable views on women or gays, or, like the Belgian royals, be descended from monsters who killed 10m in Congo.
Against this wall of hatred and bigotry, I have no doubt that Meghan will rally, in a £53,000 gown by a sustainable couturier.
