XJazz Festival in Berlin. It takes place for the first time in Kreuzberg, most of the locations are on Skalitzer Straße. Yesterday I saw some gigs and I was very impressed. Jazz isn´t my kind of music, but I´m very interested in it and I try to learn and to watch bands, whenever there is an opportunity. I can´t really juge with my limited knowledge, but it seemed to me that the niveau was very high. First I saw the Birgitta Flick Quartett in the Privatclub, modern Jazz, sometimes slow but always imaginative. Then I changed the location and saw Weniger and Friedman in the Emmaus Church. Vibraphon and Saxophon, what a combination. I never saw someone play so fast (vibraphon) and it was an extraordinary experience. After that I walked to the Fluxbau, the last location. My personal favourite that evening was Melanoia, a combination of very good musicians and the most interesting arrangements. Last but not least the jam session, which was great. Musicians from diverse bands gathered in the fluxbau and played together. I couldn´t leave, it was really fun to sit there and listen. I don´t know if I ever will be a Jazz-lover, but I really enjoy concerts (most of the time). We wait and see, .... .
when you finally got the door code to privatklub
Lost and Found
You don't want a place people see. You want one people find.
A friend who owns a couple bars around town shared that nugget of advice with me. Think of that what you like but it is an interesting point and a Technotown reality. That's often the way places hit it big here (and even subsequently suffer as a result). Despite having that in mind, I was surprised to find myself in a neon-lit schnitzel restaurant anchored by a ten-person beer and sauerkraut covered wooden table while I was looking for an electro-indie gig.
I was in Bavaria but I was looking for a guy from New Jersey. "Er.. where is the Privatklub?" Through the door marked bathroom and on the left. Duh. In a schnitzel joint, through the bathrooms, on the left, down the stairs: why wouldn't there be a club? A whole new level of digging that my buddy would love.
Well, I did too. The atmosphere was good and I was pumped for the Memory Tapes (aka. Dayve Hawke) gig. His LP Seek Magic is a winner and I was curious to see how it'd pan out on stage.
The first impression wasn't great as I'm no big fan of playback: he and his drummer - a guy who looked like a cross between Kramer and Napoleon Dynamite - were only paired with samples and synths. The result, though? A great gig.
Backed by Kramer Dynamite's tight disco beats, Memory Tapes filled up the not-so-packed room with their performance. They seemingly seamless show (marked by a single pause) was a joyride thanks to great guitar licks, soulful vocals and energy which could be felt from the basement to Bavaria. They nailed the hit "Bicycle" and the track "Green Knight" was off the hook. If you haven't seen them already, go digging for Memory Tapes, Seek Magic and Bavarian bathrooms turned gig venues.
