Here’s that volcanic island again, but at a much smaller size so that the low res texture isn’t so badly stretched out. The source data for it are the images from http://timetocode.tumblr.com/post/93970694121/volcanic-map-generation-step-by-step
Hypothetically, I could use the generator to produce some much higher resolution images... though I imagine anything produced by it is only suitable seen from far away. The generator itself doesn’t actually have textures like sand, rock, grass, instead it just paints colors onto a blank image. It is really for making maps, not for making believable textures. Even if it did paint high res textures, it would be several gigabytes of data by the time it had skinned a small island in such a manner that a player could walk around the island without it being a blurry mess. While I know very little about 3D engines, I’m pretty sure that’s not how things are done. Even if it could be done that way, its not an option for the web games I intend to keep making. So I guess this generator could be used to make either make ugly stuff, some sort of simple aesthetic, or to make some varying “as seen in the distance” LoD models+textures for the terrain. I think...?
This also happens to be “”multiplayer”” or at least multiple people can spawn into this map as flying cubes and well... fly around. There’s probably a game in there, but I’m going back to making a first person shooter, probably.
