Q&A

What made you want to play basketball professionally?

I just love the game so much and after college I did not want to stop playing. I had always dreamed of playing professionally and you can’t really beat getting paid to play the sport you love while being able to see the world at the same time.  

Was getting a contract difficult?

It was definitely a little stressful but I pretty much left it up to my agent. He was confident he could get a contract so I really did have to do much.

What sort of things are included in a contract?

Every contract I’ve had has included an apartment, car, plane flights, TV, and just the basic things I need to live.

How was your experience playing in Groningen? What difficulties did you find playing there?

It has been great so far. I am really enjoying it. Groningen is a great city with so much to do. I am on a good team with awesome teammates and fans. I have met a lot of great people and had some amazing experiences I won't forget. Obviously the main difficulty is missing your friends and family at times. Whenever I do start missing home, I just try and remind myself how lucky I am to be living out my dream.

What did you do in your off-time when you weren't playing and practicing?

Playing overseas you definitely have a ton of off time. You usually practice twice a day but then the rest of the day is all yours. I like to go walk around in the city and enjoy the sites. I also play a lot of video games, watch shows, and do some reading. 

If you could have known something before playing overseas that you wish someone had told you beforehand, what would it be?

Haha, I wish someone would have taught me how to drive stick before I came overseas. I was struggling when I first started driving stick and everybody was getting mad at me stalling in the middle of traffic.

How did you find living by yourself in a different country?

It is definitely an adjustment and can be lonely at times but I honestly like my own space so I don't mind.

What advice would you give to future athletes wanting to play professionally?

I would say go for it. I definitely think you should give it a shot. It has definitely made me grow up and learn a lot about myself being on my own overseas for the past 3 years. It is an experience I am extremely grateful for and I try to cherish every moment of it.

Where has your favorite place to play been so far?

That’s hard to say. I have enjoyed each place I have been, but if I had to pick one place it would probably be Germany. 

What are your plans for next season?

I am not sure. I will go back to Denver for the summer and workout and wait for a call from my agent about my next destination.

Did you find that your salary increased after the first two years of playing?

Yes, it did for the most part.
