This hatchling release activity at the #SanJuan surfing area yesterday afternoon had surprise participants :D Thanks for supporting CURMA, @jerichorosalesofficial & @kimcamjones! Repost from Pawikan Watcher @miilleet: Thank you for joining us in the release of 83 hatchlings today! 🐢😊 Hope you enjoyed the magical experience! 💕✨ #PawikanWatchers #projectCURMA #savePHseas #route63travels #LaUnion

The Search for the Clutch
The team was up bright and early, ready to release 91 olive ridley marine turtles that hatched from their nest this morning.
This was 1 of the 4 clutches the team was monitoring for this week. (PAWIKAN WATCHERS/Jason Apolonio)
As we bid our well wishes to the hatchlings making their way to the sea, one of our volunteers, Andrew, noticed a turtle making its way out of a hole in the sand. Thinking it just fell in, Andrew decided to take a closer look and help the little guy out. To his surprise, another turtle was on its way up!

CURMA volunteer Regine confirmed that it was indeed another set of hatchlings from a different nest. We all watched as 4 hatchlings slowly inched their way out, one after the other.
After a long pause, it was decided that we'll be digging through the hole to look for the clutch.
What started out as a small hole...
...became big enough to fit 3 people! CURMA founder Sachi Tamayo joined in. (PAWIKAN WATCHERS/Jason Apolonio)
After almost 2 hours of digging, there were no signs of other hatchlings nor egg shells. The sun was beating down on us so we decided to head back to our HQ and come back in the afternoon.

Unfortunately, when we went back to check on the hole again, we didn't find any hatchlings.
We may not have found the nest but CURMA found a way to cheer us up! :) (PAWIKAN WATCHERS/Jason Apolonio)
It's actually quite a miracle these hatchlings survived. The area they emerged from was right within the tidal line. How the four hatchlings survived after 2 months of being repeatedly submerged underwater is quite a feat. This proves how hardy marine turtles can be!
Learn more about CURMA, the awesome pawikan protection & conservation program for which the #PawikanWatchers pilot team is volunteering. Repost from our volunteer @miilleet: Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions (CURMA) upholds Respect, Responsibility, and Care in Action. They promote clean up and revitalization of marine assets. As CURMA volunteers, the #PawikanWatchers aim to expand awareness on conservation and protection of our marine resources. 👏🐚🍀🌊 #savePHseas #projectCURMA @route63travels
Regine Tibong of @projectcurma oriented the #PawikanWatchers team on #projectCURMA's aims, future plans, hatchery management, & filling up some of the marine turtle reporting forms. Later this afternoon, CURMA will conduct a simulation exercise in which the volunteers will try to find a nest & then transfer it to the hatchery. #savePHseas #seaturtle #LaUnion @route63travels
Repost from #PawikanWatchers volunteer @miilleet: According to Dr. AA Yaptinchay, "The approach is to manage the threats around the turtle, not manage the turtle." More learnings today as we, #PawikanWatchers, undergo training. 👍🐢📚 #savePHseas #projectCURMA
Repost from #PawikanWatchers volunteer @tsapsuy: Yesterday, we were able to assist in the release of 77 olive ridley turtle hatchlings here in San Juan. Just another day at the #PawikanWatchers program! :D #savePHseas #ProjectCurma #seaturtle #LaUnion @projectcurma @savephseas @route63travels
