Lio twists the longer strands of his wet hair as he stares at the reflection of himself in the mirror. He had this haircut since he was a lot younger and he didn’t change it that much, just a occasional snips here and there whenever it was too long, but this time it felt as if it was way too long. Earlier in the week someone had bumped into him on the street and called him out for looking too much like a girl, much to his displeasure as it brought back many junior high memories of his former classmates. This wasn’t the first time someone thought he was a girl, frankly, it was getting rather annoying and tedious to listen to.
He had thought about cutting his hair shorter in order to avoid the embarrassment, maybe if he had a better haircut people would take him more seriously and treat him with the right gender. Furthermore, perhaps people wouldn’t have to constantly ask you if you were in a relationship with a girl, to which you had to correct to say that you were dating Lio who is a guy. He felt bad on the inside hearing you constantly correct people of his gender because of the way he had kept his appearance.
He silently watched as droplets of water dripped onto the bathroom counter, his eyes lingering on the sight of his greenish-blond hair in frustration and exhaustion. He didn’t want to bother you with his own insecurities of himself because he thought that you already had a lot on your plate ever since you had to help with political issues regarding the aftermath of the Burnish community. He sighed and as he was about to reach for the pair of scissors that were in the drawers, the door creaked open and you walked through.
“I was knocking earlier to see if you were done with your shower, is something wrong?” You closed the door shut behind you as you came to his side. You saw that Lio was staring intensely at the mirror and when you turned your head towards it, you would only see the height difference between the two of you. Perhaps he felt insecure about his height? That could be a reason for his silence but you noticed him twirling strands of his hair.
“Lio, are you thinking about cutting your hair?” You watched as he silently gulped and nodded.
“Are you worried that people are mistaking your gender too much?” You continued, noting the way Lio hadn’t responded in words but in mere nods. You had a gut feeling that something came up within Lio ever since your coworker asked about your ‘girlfriend’, but you didn’t think that Lio would take it so close to his heart. Granted, he was a very passionate person and you absolutely adored that side of him.
You reached out to brush back the strands of his hair, tucking them behind his ear, “I like your hair like this Lio, it fits you very well.” You opened the drawer and brought out a towel and brush.
Your hands pulled the towel over his head and carefully dried it, “I don’t think anyone else but you can pull this look off. Anyone who tells you otherwise can kiss the ground because I think you already look amazing.” You gently brushed through his locks of hair while continuing your small monologue. “It matches you so well Lio, whatever people say about you shouldn’t be your concern. I don’t think your hair is a problem either, I’ve always loved it ever since we met.”
“If you had shorter hair I wouldn’t be able to comb my fingers through it, see?” You brushed his hair with your fingers, the strands falling as smooth as water, “it’s very soft and easy to work with and. . .”
You leaned closer to his ear as you wrapped your arms around his neck, your warm embrace comforting him from the cold doubts and insecurities within him.
“It feels really good to kiss you and have my fingers in your hair.” You nuzzled your face against the crook of his neck as you left butterfly kisses on his skin. Your body was pressed closely against his back as you felt his hair tickle your skin. You felt his hand reach up to touch your cheek before he turned his head and pulled you into a long kiss, his thoughts no longer occupied by the thought of cutting his own hair.
“Thank you, S/o.”

“You guys were behind the burning of Foresight academy?!” Galo yelled in shock as he scratched his mountain of hair, “man. . . when they said two students were behind it I didn’t think it would be you two!”
“I guess so. . .” you awkwardly scratched your cheek, “at first we were worried some of our old classmates looking for us, but they gave up after a couple of weeks. Lio’s wardrobe changed entirely!” you laughed while pointing at Lio, “he used to wear those basic school uniforms with the button up and slacks, but now he sports the leather look!”
You whined as you felt Lio tug on your cheeks, clearly showing his embarrassment. “S-Shut up you! We don’t talk about that!”
“B-But you were so cute!”
Meis leaned his head over towards you, “you were a skater before?”
"Yup! I actually practiced skating with Lio back at the frozen lake Galo and he dropped into, I can’t believe you guys melted it all the way! I don’t even think I could skate there anymore!” You laughed it off while Lio turned his head off to the side, feeling a bit guilty for ruining what was once a good memory for you. He had already thought numerous times about how your skating career was affected by his own routine, but remembering the frozen lake from weeks ago made him feel disappointed in himself.
From the corner of your eye you had already spotted his dampened mood and pulled him close to you. “But without you two, we wouldn’t have defeated Kray! Thank god!”
You smiled before giving Lio a kiss on the cheek, his face growing more crimson by the second as he tried to act calm, “I was hoping to skate there last time when we crash landed near the cave but I was worried we’d get caught.”
“Oh! I remember that!” Galo perked up, “you were talking about it to Lio when we first met, maaan~ You were super intimidating! So cool!”
“How so?” You asked, your lips forming a pout to which Lio resisted the urge to grab you right there and kiss you, he too wanted to know what Galo was talking about.
“Let’s see. . .”
“Oi! Come back! Wait!” Galo called out, struggling against the ropes that tied his hands behind his back while Lio turned away from him. You were leaning against the wall, your piercing (e/c) staring directly at him before watching Lio continue towards the rest of the Burnish having their meal. Part of you really wanted to throw this man out off of a cliff for his ignorance, but you knew that Lio wouldn’t take that too well. You clicked your tongue before walking up to Galo, crouching down to his level as you leaned forward.
“What do you take us for Rescue Hero? Monsters? We’re humans, we cry and feel anger just the same as you. We have our own heart beats, isn’t that what makes us alive, like you?” You narrowed your eyes while he stared at you in surprise, “we make sacrifices just like you guys.”
Your hands reached out to his chin, gripping it tightly, “know your god damn place here Rescue hero. You’re only here because of Kray Foresight and you’re not the only person here who had to make fucking decisions that you think is right for everyone,” you hissed.
“Since you’re such a hero, why don’t you save us then? Aren’t we the one suffering?” Galo carefully gulped before his eyes dropped to the floor, his mind running wild with the new information given to him. Was he fighting for the wrong side here? You quickly stood up and turned around, your body about to walk back towards the group to clean up but you remained still.
You clenched your fist close to your heart, “we never asked for this you know. Not all of us have an equal chance at life, and we must do what it takes for us to survive,” you slowly dropped your fist to your side, “Galo Thymos was it? Next time I see you in our way, I’ll burn right through you.”
You took slow steps forward and craned your neck to turn to him, “this is Lio’s dream and I won’t let you take that away from him.” You started to walk away from him, Galo still remaining silent and still from his spot, his struggles halting to a screeching stop long ago.
You merely scoffed, he knew nothing about the Burnish or your struggles. You grit your teeth at the thought, withholding your frustration and shoving it down through multiple layers. Galo Thymos knew nothing about your struggle, he was just a regular human destined for greatness.
As you reached Lio’s side, he grabbed onto your hand and intertwined your fingers, his lips parting slightly for words before closing. Your eyes occasionally flickered to the exit of the cave which was next to the lake but you focused on the violet flames that were keeping everyone warm. Lio tightened his grip around your hand at the sight.
“I’m sorry we couldn’t spend time here again. I know how much you wanted to go out there.” You bit the bottom of your lips to stifle your tears.
“It’s okay.”
Thats right. You had to make a lot of sacrifices to get where you are. Galo watched as Lio pulled you close to him, comforting your taller figure before quickly wrapping up their activities to leave on the stolen vehicle.
“I felt really bad about that, S/o. You wouldn’t know how much I thought about what you said afterwards,” Galo started, “your words stuck with me and I’m quite lucky you gave me that second chance,” he raised his open palm, almost as if he was imagining the Promare’s flames were dancing in the center. Galo couldn’t express it in words, but he was utterly grateful for your flames which was strong enough to pierce through Kray’s fire.
“You’re really devoted and honest S/o,” He smiled. “Your dedication really rivals my firefighter soul!”
“I can’t take most of the credit considering the fact that you and Lio were the ones to complete the Promare’s burning.” You shook your head as Lio toyed with the strands of your hair, thinking about what you had said to Galo.
“Was that your first kiss by the way boss?” Gueira asked, Lio dropping his previous actions.
“No, it wasn’t,” he deadpanned.
“W-What? Eeeeh?”
“No way! Boss had his first kiss before that?!”
“S/o! Explain!”
“About that. . .” you scratched your cheek awkwardly as you looked over towards Lio, “in junior high. . . our classmates thought that setting me up with another guy would be a great idea so he confessed to me under the tree near the gardening club! So he was—”
“He was about to kiss her so I kissed her first.” Lio butted, clearly annoyed at the memory since he crossed his arms around his chest. “He got so scared he ran for his life, serves him right.”
“He wasn’t even that great of a guy, he absolutely hated the Burnish and it pissed me off.” Lio continued, rolling his eyes as if this was a very simple and boring topic. You felt your face redden from embarrassment and you quickly covered your face with your hands as you had comedic steam coming out of your ears.
“It was so embarrassing seeing him stare at us!” You commented.
“Did you guys start dating after that?” Galo asked.
“Actually, we never even said anything about being boyfriend or girlfriend, or whatever,” Lio rested his chin under the palm of his hand, “we never needed words,” he turned to you and smiled innocently.
“Right darling?” You let out an exhausted sigh before curling up to Lio, a pout on your face.
“Sheesh~ That doesn’t excuse the fact that our friends kept talking about it. . .”
"What? That was a good thing!”
“You liked the attention Lio! It was weird hearing about it from teachers too!”

“Why?” Lio refused to look up at you, his eyes lowering to the ground as he shifted from one foot to another. “You could have left me there. Now you’re wrapped up in my mess as well.”
“Not only did I take away your chances for a skating career, you won’t even be able to live a normal life anymore. . . And it’s all my fault.” Your lips pressed together to form a line, you would have interrupted him at this very moment but it seems as if he had other things to say. You could feel how scared he was as he held onto the fabric of your clothes, his lips quivered as the shadows from his bangs tried to hide the emotions in his eyes. “You should have left me behind. . . Why. . .?”
You both were hiding within a dark alleyway, shielded away from the rest of society as Lio trembled in your arms. If you listened closely to the world surrounding you, there were sirens blasting across the streets, possibly to search for the Burnish who caused the destruction in the first place. However, you merely focused on Lio’s sniffles and cries as you pulled him closer to your chest, his body leaning against the wall as you pinned him there.
“How could I be so foolish? All this talk about saving the Burnish and being different while I hurt innocent people . . .” Lio could feel his throat tighten as the tears rolling down his cheeks made it hard to create proper words, “It feels like I’m just a monster!”
“You’re not a monster.” Your hands gripped his shoulder and waist as you pressed your forehead against his, “you’re not a monster Lio,” you repeated, his eyes widening as he finally looked up at you with his gorgeous eyes.
“But. . . !”
“But what?” Lio could feel your breath tickle the skin of his lips as you stared down at him, “you didn’t do anything wrong.” You heard him whimper slightly as you tightened your grip around his waist.
Lio nibbled on the skin of his bottom lip, the words stuck in his throat. “You didn’t do anything Lio. Everything I did is for you, but it isn’t your responsibility.” You leaned towards his face, your lips barely grazing his.
“Did you really think I would let you go?” You slowly raised his hand closer to you, caressing the tips of his fingers gently. No matter how hard Lio tried to turn away from your alluring gaze to avoid falling into your affections, he felt himself trapped in your warm embrace. “I will go to the ends of the Earth for you Lio, I’ll be the one you can count on for all your secrets. I want to be the one to make your dreams come true.”
“I’ll be there for you when you need to be protected. I’ll be your shield and spear if you want me to. I’ll be there for you, just like all those nights before.” You kissed the tips of his fingers, your gaze never leaving his, “I’ll be your darling if it means I can stay by your side.”
“Everything you did had always made my heart feel so alive, everything you are makes me feel like I’m burning inside.” You lead his hand across your body, his touch giving you a warm sensation which lasted on your skin before guiding him towards your heart, “see? It’s beating because of you."
True to your words, he could feel the rapid pounding from your heart. Your body felt so warm against his, it was intoxicating to say the least. He carefully dragged his fingers across the area, admiring the way your body fits his so well, your heart beat aligning with his own heart’s rhythm. “All of me is yours Lio.”
“How can you be so sure that you will stay by my side forever?” You felt his arms wrap around your neck, pulling you back closer, “do you think it’s worth getting burned by me, darling?” You could see that he was merely testing the waters with you with that name, but it gave you a rush of adrenaline and excitement hearing it from his lips.
You chuckled in response, “do you really want an answer from me?” your lips curled up into a smile before finally bringing your lips against his. Lio gently tugged at your hair as he angled himself to deepen the kiss, your warmth spreading across his body as you pressed yourself as close as you can against him.
You never needed words to describe what you both were feeling.

“Lio!” You waved at him with a stack of papers in your hand, your grin spread across your face as you ran towards him to engulf him in a hug, “I got a really good score on my test after you helped me study!”
Lio looked towards the paper, noticing the high grade and patted the top of your head despite being slightly shorter than you. You worked really hard to get these scores and he was proud that he was able to help you out.
“Good job S/o, I’m really happy for you.”
You two were just students in school, trying to live your life despite the widespread attacks of the Burnish, trying to survive when the two of you were discriminated. You brushed away the strands of hair that was blocking Lio’s face, admiring the earring that you bought him several years ago.
You’ve known Lio ever since you were children, your family bringing the two of you together at a local park. You’ve always been by his side no matter the times he was often ridiculed for his feminine appearance or lanky arms. The moment you knew he was a Burnish made your heart flutter in happiness.
You loved the way his violet flames would entrance you at night whenever you both snuck out, you loved the adrenaline you got when you were with him as you hid near a lake to unleash the burning flames inside your heart. You loved listening to him as he talked to you about what he was going to do to free the Burnish, the way his voice was filled with strong determination as he spoke underneath the trees. You simply loved being with him.
You were a figure skater looking to make it big within the industry but you often took down offers whenever Lio couldn’t watch you skate. You knew Lio wanted to protest against your decision but you found that without Lio, you didn’t want to skate anymore.
He was the light of your life.
The flame which sparked your passions.
So you started to skate on the abandoned lake with him by your side, the two of you dancing underneath the moonlit sky with the flames trailing behind your skates. This was the best possible solution for the two of you to live peacefully alongside the flames that licked your skin. He wasn’t the best skater but he would do it to see you smile and that made your heart do several triple axels.
Lio picked up the stacks of papers as you both started to walk home. However, you and him only made it a couple of steps away from the school when he collapsed to his knees. He felt as if he was running out of breath as his body trembled.
“Lio!” You dropped to the floor as you gripped his shoulders, “what’s going on?!”
Lio could feel his head pounding as if he was being crushed several times, the pain traveling from his chest as he gripped his heart tightly. ‘Why now. . . ?’ He clutched his skin as he struggled to inhale simple breaths. The voices inside were screaming at him, they were scratching the inside of his walls to reach the outside world, to destroy and burn everything within his path. He turned to look at your worried face.
“You need to run S/o,” you could hear his words crack with every word but he kept going, “you need to run!”
“Lio! Calm down, you’re going to be oka—“ The smell of smoke filled your nose as you were completely surrounded by Lio’s wall of flames which spread across the trees.
Your grip tightened on his shoulder as you turned around to the sound of screams and gasps from the crowd, Lio’s eyes widening in horror as his classmates stumbled back. All of their faces held fear and disgust, all of these emotions causing him to feel sick to his stomach. They dropped their books and quickly ran away from the school, each of them calling the police and fire department to capture you both at once.
“The rumors were true. . .”
“They really are the Burnish!”
“They’re monsters!”
“Everyone run!”
“Get out of here S/o!” You stared down at Lio, his pleading eyes telling you to run away from him as he desperately clawed at his chest while the raging fire stormed the area. You only had a few minutes until the Freeze Force was coming. You could see the tears form at the corners of his eyes before he started to sob into your chest, begging you to go on without him. But. . .
Leaving Lio was never an option.
You’ll be by his side no matter what the costs.
Lio’s flames burned like the single sun. . . But your’s burned a thousand.
You stood up, grabbing Lio and throwing him over your shoulder with your strength as you turned around to the school, your eyes narrowing in anger and determination. Lio cried out in protest as he tried to release himself from you. If you planned this correctly, this would give you enough time to run away with Lio.
“What are you doing S/o! Put me down! Stop!” He threw fists onto your back as he struggled in your grasp, “What are you doing?!”
You held up your hand to unleash a massive wildfire onto the school itself. The students screams echoing in the distance as several facilities crashed to the ground, your vibrant flames swallowing everything whole. You inhaled carefully, the cries of the Promare settling down slightly within you. Lio was left stunned at your actions.
“Why did you do that. . . ? S/o. . . ”
“I’m sorry Lio.” Your fist clenched together as it dropped to your side, “I won’t let anyone take you away from me.”
You could hear the faint siren noises coming from behind, the Rescue Team was coming quick. You twisted your heel and made a run for it with Lio in your arms, the male trying desperately to stop you.
You knew that Lio may never forgive you for this, and frankly you wouldn’t be surprised. Your own selfishness had clouded your judgement, but. . . not once in your heart did you feel that you didn’t make the right choice to save Lio. Everything you’ve done by his side were going to be for his sake and for the Burnish. You wanted to see Lio achieve his ultimate goal of freeing the Burnish and the world.
You were going to make his dreams a reality.

“It’s true! Lio was there to lead us to a better path,” Gueira reached behind him to ruffle the younger man’s hair, much to his protests, “S/o was by his side the entire time doing most of the protecting though! Have you seen Lio’s arms?!”
“H-Hey shut up right now!” The greenish-blond was blushing profusely as he tried to keep a straight face in front of everyone. “Hands to yourself Gueira!”
“You’re one to talk with S/o!” He retorted, to which Lio stuttered out a complaint but it was overlooked by Gueira.
“You guys are teasing Lio so much,” you chuckled as you opened a bag of chips, “it’s not his fault he wasn’t much of a fighter!” you held up your arm next to Lio’s, “see?”
True to your words, you were definitely more muscular than Lio and you grinned proudly, “to be by Lio’s side means to be able to protect him!”
“Oooh! You’re right! Always been the most dedicated one aren’t you S/o! When I first saw you guys, you and Lio seemed pretty close! You was standing by his side while he sat on his little throne. The one thing I remember were your really cool skates, you were pretty damn fast! I almost got burned by you!” Galo chimed in, his voice being the loudest out of all of you as he was the most curious to your relationship. “Your fire burns but it’s not as hot as mine!” he playfully bragged.
“You wish! My flames will burn everything like a thousand suns!” You grinned.
“I love the sound of that!” Galo laughed, “Lio! Are you gonna tell us the story then?”
Everyone quickly turned to face Lio who was still red-faced because of what you did when they first approached Galo. He thought he looked super cool on his throne with you by his side, he didn’t think Galo would bring it up now. You were often by his side, whether it was leaning against his throne or on his lap, it made him burst with confidence. Lio could feel his face heat up even more when he kept thinking about it.
“You can tell them Lio,” you gave him a gentle smile and squeeze of his hand to reassure him before giving him a kiss on the cheek. You also felt a bit giddy when it came to talking about your relationship with Lio, since you both went way back, back to when you were both simple kids. You formed a pout on your lips as you looked towards Lio.
He knew this was a trick from you, using your puppy-dog (e/c) eyes to lure him into doing whatever you liked. You would often do this just to tease him and these were just those moments. Sadly, he fell right into it.
“F-Fine then, since you’re all so desperate to know!” He huffed.
“Now thats the spirit!”

Lio sighed underneath his breath, he didn’t expect the road trip to be so rowdy and filled with excitement. It was a simple car trip but Galo is trying really hard to make everything overhyped, this included the types of music they listened to, the abundance of spicy chips and various soda bottles. Gueira was often toying with the music while Meis stared out the window to look at the vast amount of cars passing by.
As much as he thanked Galo greatly for his help during the Promare, he often wondered how much energy the man had stored in his body. It felt as if he was a ten year old in the body of an adult, beefy firefighter. Perhaps it was just his own scrawny body that he felt so exhausted or strained by daily activities. He was so used to creating various plans to save the Burnish or escape from the Freeze Force, but now everything seems so quiet.
It was too peaceful.
This was something he was unused to, even being able to relax at his own apartment with you was already something that he needed to adjust to. As he stared out to the side and into the sky, you turned your head at him to notice the scowl on his face.
“Is something wrong Lio?” you whispered, tucking a few strands from his face away, “you seem to be in deep thought.”
“No, I’m just not used to just having this kind of life,” he mumbled as he propped his elbow against the window sill and his chin against his hand, “I still feel on edge, almost as if Kray is still watching over us.”
You frowned slightly before intertwining your hand with his, you had to admit that this amount of peace made your heart do a couple of flips while also giving you nervous jitters. The two of you were so used to running and hiding that you didn’t know how well you would adjust to normal society, you both didn’t know how to feel about just being called an ex-Burnish or a regular human.
“But. . .” you started, your lips beginning to form a small smile as you leaned against his shoulder, “having this peace. . . it feels nice having it with everyone. It feels like we’re a real family now, don’t you think?” You felt Lio’s fingers twitch underneath yours as he tightened his hold on you.
You could hear him give a small hum of acknowledgement. Lio didn’t want to admit it, but hearing your voice talk to him made him feel at ease. Earlier throughout the road trip he would stare at you as you picked through the pile of chips or candies, he didn’t want to seem like such a creep about it, even if he was your boyfriend but he didn’t want to come off as strange. There was something so ethereal about you that he couldn’t put his finger on it, but all he could say that he was happy that you were his and vise versa.
He felt you lean your head against his as you closed your eyes, your gentle breaths calling out to him, luring him into sleep as well. He let himself pull you closer to his body, his arm wrapped around your torso to bring you close while his head was against yours. It was nice having this peaceful moment together.
Even if Meis and Gueira were trying to take photos of both of you while Galo complained about how he had to focus on the road instead of seeing the photos.
