While I generally agree with posts like this, this specifically is not ENTIRELY true. Yes birds like many parrots never should’ve been brought into captivity as readily available pets since the majority of people shouldn’t be owning them due to their inability to do proper research or provide adequate care even when they’re well aware they’re not caring for their bird properly but saying cages are completely bad isn’t good for education.
Cages that are an appropriate size for the species they’re housing that are set up properly (see photos) are not evil. They provide the bird a personal safe space, an area to reside at night or when you’re away, to keep them safe and engaged as well. They absolutely should not spend their whole life in it and do need several hours of time daily to fly around (yes even in a big cage which is what they should be in to begin with). The only time a permanent “cage” is acceptable is when it’s a larger aviary for example.
This post is likely trying to promote the fact that cages sold in petstores are the neglectful ones which is absolutely correct as 99% of what almost any pet store sells is severely under sized and should be a travel carrier if anything at all. Even the tiny 40 gram budgie requires a cage that’s 20x30+ inches with 40 or so height at BARE minimum, and Macaws/Cockatoos require 6x10 ft aviaries. There’s a lot of work to be done improving the care standards of birds in captivity but posts like this are not going to be beneficial to it in the long run.
