I found these pillars topped with stones and pennies at the perimeter an old cemetery, which seemed to have pretty clear ritual significance to me. Not too far from this spot was also the grave of 19th century baby that appears to have received tokens of propitiation over time.

I love seeing things like this.

Holy Mass Is "No Mere Empty Commemoration"

Pope Pius XII, Mediator Dei (1947):

68. The august sacrifice of the altar, then, is no mere empty commemoration of the passion and death of Jesus Christ, but a true and proper act of sacrifice, whereby the High Priest by an unbloody immolation offers Himself a most acceptable victim to the Eternal Father, as He did upon the cross. “It is one and the same victim; the same person now offers it by the ministry of His priests, who then offered Himself on the cross, the manner of offering alone being different.”[59]

Of Jesus’s sacrifice, the gospel-writer John put it this way: “He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world” [1 John 2:2]. “Propitiation” means an appeasement for wrath. So, if you believe in Christ, then God has absolutely no wrath against your sin any longer. The debt has been paid, His wrath has been satisfied, and you are totally and completely forgiven!

How shall a holy and just God treat us sinners with so much kindness as to give us the greatest Reality in the universe (His Son) to enjoy with the greatest joy possible? The answer is that God put our sins on His Son, and judged them there, so that He could put them out of His mind, and deal with us mercifully and remain just and holy at the same time.
