They had a really bad childhood. And a reasonable action would be for them to try their hardest to forget. But no, not the Hargreeves family. They chose to recreate it, relive it. They chose to make it better.
It started off with Vanya. She was used to being left alone. Even now while being surrounded by her family members. Even with the love from her siblings, she still found herself wanting to be alone. So they never questioned it when she stayed in her room all day way from the others.
While alone she watched kid shows from when she was younger. It’s not like their father allowed them to watch TV. At least not with his knowledge. But sometimes, Grace would let them watch an hour of a show as long as it was child appropriate.
So here was Vanya, laying in bed and wrapped in a ton of blankets with both headphones in her ears watching Blues Clues.
A smile creeped on her face as she watched a blue spotted dog jump around her screen.
She didn’t hear the soft knock at the door.
“Vanya?” It was Ben and he was a little worried about her. He wasn’t a big fan of not seeing Vanya all day.
He waited a few seconds but didn’t hear anything so he slowly opened the door.
He saw her under the blankets. She was giggling to herself.
Ben smiled to himself, he liked when she was happy. Seeing his sibling happy made him happy. He walked in leaving the door open. As he got closer to her he could see she couldn’t hear him walk in.
“Vanya?” He calls louder. No answer. He needed to gain her attention but he also didn’t want to startle her. So he did the best next thing one could do.
He walks closer to her bed, his weight making the floorboard squeak underneath him, however it didn't gain her attention. Extending his hand he softly tapped her shoulder.
Bad idea.
She screamed. A scream that was pretty loud and short, but still piercing to the ears. And in that small moment of complete terror she pushed him across the room with her sound powers.
He flew to the wall and slid to the ground.
There was a second of silence.
“Ben!” She yells. Frantically getting off the bed, phone now forgotten. “Ben I’m so sorry,” she says again now by his side.
Ben groans as he rubs the back of his head. “Remind me to wear a helmet when I come into your room,” he says jokingly.
“I’m so sorry,” she says again. “I didn’t mean to- I’m still learning to control…” she starts.
“Shhh,” Ben says. He finally looks up to Vanya’s face. Tears on the brink of falling from her eyes.
He gets off the ground, taking her hand and bringing her back over to the bed. “Vanya,” he tried again but she was already crying.
Scary thoughts had entered her mind. The complete fear from the past. Some memory that was so faint and yet at the same time strong enough to still scare her.
Everyday when she wasn’t taking her prescription was another memory unlocked and another day to learn control of what she has. Learn control of what she can do.
Such fear that sent Ben crashing into the wall. It wasn’t even a thought given. No thought, just action. And before she could stop it it was already happening in front of her eyes.
What she did in the past became rushing to the forefront of her mind.
Like what happened with Allison...
Such anger coursing through her. How dare Allison say such horrible things to her. How dare she say it here? How dare she say it right now? When all her sister did was join their sibling in saying she was “normal” when clearly she wasn’t. She wasn’t ordinary! She was special just like the rest of them!
Thinking back, Vanya knew she just needed to take a breather then.
But she didn’t, not back then. No instead she had swang out her arm and the fast swing of her bow sent a ear piercing ding in the air, slicing her sister’s throat open-
Learn control of what the consequences are and can be.
Ben sat on the bed and pulled her closer to him. A hug. A nice warm hug that he knew Vanya really needed right now. “It’s ok, Vanya.” His calm deep voice slowly bringing her back to reality, out of her mind and away from the bad thoughts. “Vanya I’m ok. You didn’t hurt me, it’s ok.”
They sat there in each other’s arms. Vanya crying and shaking a little and Ben just holding her telling her over and over that he is ok, that everything is ok.
In a matter of minutes she stopped crying and was left with wet snot and dry hiccups but no more tears.
“What happened, sweetheart? What has you so easily startled?” He asked her, genuinely concerned for her.
“I was feeling small,” she replied, rubbing her face into his shoulder as if she was hiding from something. Ben began to hum again caressing his fingers in her hair.
He understood what that meant. Sometimes the siblings would take turns regressing in the comfort of each other around. They did it so they could relive as if they were kids but this time not as traumatic as their childhood had been. And even though they had it planned, sometimes the regression was involuntary and unexpected. Ben can only assume this time wasn’t planned.
“I’m sorry for scaring you, little one,” he says once more.
“And I’m sorry for losing control,” she said.
“Remember, you will get better at controlling it in time.”
She held on tighter to him. Of course she’ll get better at it over time. And that small hope of eventually learning how to control herself made her cling on to him tighter. Ben didn't mind though. Soon enough he could feel Vanya's breaths become longer, shallower. She was falling asleep in her arms.
Ben would have let her go to sleep, but he suddenly remembered why he came in here. He shook her awake again and pulled back to see her face.
“Little Vee have you eaten today?”
He could see the forgotten bag of mini marshmallows that was littering her bed sheets.
She nodded her head and grinned. “Mellows,” she replied, reaching for one and popping it into her mouth.
He smiled. “Yes well, let’s get you some real food huh? How do you like the sound of that?” He stood up stretching his arms out wide, gestured for her to hang on to him. “You’d like some dinner, wouldn’t you?”
“Chicken nuggets!” She exclaimed and threw herself into Ben's arms.
“Yep! You can eat chicken nuggets.”
Together they walked out of her room and to the kitchen.
He loves candy and cereal. It’s really hard to get him to eat anything else. And he loves to watch tv. And use his phone, so it’s kid safe mode. Loves emojis, pillow forts, and stickers. Oh, and anything glittery/shinny. He’s approximately 9-12 years old
✨Patton💙✨
As we all know patton loves cookies. He’s gets a maximum of 3 a day and not all at once. He loves watching cartoons with Emile and playing with blocks. He won’t fall asleep unless you read him a bed time story. Has a lot of stuffies. Oh, and he’s a tattletale. He’s approximately 4-7 years old.
✨Janus💛✨
He has a tether when he regresses. Without it he will suck on his thumb or, if no one is around, try to put other objects in his mouth. Janus always needs super vision and constant validation. As well as some activity to do. He really likes peak-a-boo. He’s approximately 1-3 years old.
