Pain was lancing up his arms, down his legs, searing across his back. His face felt numb and wet, one side of his face warm and sticky. Reaching a hand up to his eye - was that his hand? Shaking, white and spattered with blood?
His ears were ringing so loudly he could hear nothing else but the dull drone and the pounding of his heart. The lights were too bright, the cold, highly polished floor under him spattered with debris and reflecting flames. Blinking away the blurriness, Ren’s eyes focussed on the scene in front of him properly, the carnage of the explosion in stark relief to the normally immaculate bridge. The hole in the hull had been sealed off immediately - the emergency shutters clattering down over the broken transparisteel, but the damage was done.
Ren, his ears still roaring and mind still slowly coming back online, blinked absently at the flames, noting how hot they felt on his skin- until he spotted a flash of bright orange that wasn’t fire. Crumpled against a console, his skin burned from the explosion and a trickle of blood coming from his ear, was Hux. His shoulder was bent awkwardly downwards, the greatcoat he usually wore to hide his thin frame crumpled at his feet.
Panic shot through Ren, and suddenly the pain ricocheting up and down his back wasn't important. He had to get to Hux. The console he was up against was on fire, and it was spreading fast.
Pulling himself up, ignoring the burning in his back and the pain in his limbs, he stood and stumbled towards Hux, the world tilting around him. He was forced to lean on items to direct his wobbly body.
Reaching Hux, Ren slumped down next to him. It was much hotter over here, and Ren could see the sweat pricking Hux’s brow as he placed two trembling fingers to his neck. A pulse. He was alive.
Ren ignored the deep relief that flooded through him, filing it away to examine another time out of danger. For now, he had to get Hux away from the fire. He slid two arms under him, realising for the first time that the blood on his hands was his own oozing from a deep gash on his arm. As he pulled Hux away from the console, he jostled his bad shoulder. Hux grunted, his brows knitting together in a frown.
“Sorry, sorry,” Ren found himself mumbling, pulling Hux’s body against his own and clumsily standing, his legs screaming with the added weight. He refused to allow himself to fall, forcing himself to cross the bridge towards safety. Reaching the door and stumbling into the hallway, he slumped to his knees, gently learning Hux against the wall, careful not to jostle his shoulder. Flopping down next to him, he let the pounding in his head and body increase in volume again. He felt loose and cold, his sleeve wet with blood, his back screaming. But, as he blearily watched the medical team sprinting towards him, it didn’t matter. Hux was out of danger. For now, Hux was safe.
Only when medics crouched by them, barking things to Ren he couldn’t hear and lifting Hux up and away from him did he realise his hand had been tightly wrapped around Hux’s.
