Lecture 5 Protest
This lecture is all about protest, empowerment, subversion, revolution and activism all words which define protest. I feel that this links well within my project within Digbeth as there are a lot of street artist that communicate ideas and that communicate ideas against the government to express communication such as a protest just in a visual way. We looked into the teenage rebellion stage looking at a movie starring James Dean, highlighting teenage rebellion. I feel our area reflects the aggression against the norms and the Custard factory highlights what goes against the norms of reality. Reflecting self determination in the area of culture, design and vintage shops surrounding the area.
We also looked into the artist of Jackson Pollock, a famous expressive artist who in a way links with the young movement in music of modern jazz. His paintings having a very expressive movement about them as if the paint is forming figures dancing. Within our structure I'm creating mark making techniques with the paint such as Pollock splashing the paint across the board creating texture and my painting upon the octopus is quite abstract in colour and mark making creating texture also. in the 60s there was a protest movement of ladies fighting against the Queens missiles to disarm them to stop the UK from having nuclear arms weapons. They created posters with peace signs (peace banners) work like this is still prominent in our surroundings in graffiti and street art communicating subliminal messages within of peace.
There is influence also by the technique of the photo montage. Such works done by Mark Wallinger of “Blair Selfie” a photo montage a sense of propaganda against blair communicating the idea of conspiracy of nuclear weapons also. The use of graphic software creates very strong imagery that can sway a persons opinion on any given subject, being used in commercial use also. It is used in illustration the use of phbcuviscomvotomontage and digital prints creating artworks of the visual form. Banksy is another street artist that we are researching as he using stencilled work pieces to convey his protests and ideas against the norm of society and the government and protests against money.
