A Day in Irish History: May 22, 2015
I was born in an Ireland where the clutches of the Catholic Church were so strong that contraception was banned, homosexuality was illegal and prayers/religious worship were inseparable from education.
I am proud that in my lifetime I have witnessed such progressive change in my own country, change that did not have to come through the loss of lives, that Ireland has advanced so far from the grip of the Catholic Church that individual choice and rights are prioritized over institutionalization. This is what it means to be free; equal rights; equal freedoms; everyone respecting and supporting each other.
Today, is a day which the Irish people will be the first in history where the question of gay marriage is put to the popular vote by means of a national referendum. I am only sad I cannot be part of this monumental day. I hope the Irish people continue to support equality and VoteYES.
