We are planning to have Rhubarb plants for sale in the HND Garden Solutions miro- nursery. Hit me up if you want to be put on the list to purchase some when ready. Times are tight. Keeping an attitude of abundance can be hard. Now is the time to save for tomorrow by sowing seeds for spring planting. Here in our weird little zone 8a microclimate that means cool weather veggies...and in a couple weeks, tomatoes and the other good stuff! Seeds are an inexpensive way to fill your garden and save money. Plants and seeds are also eligible for EBT SNAP benefits! Many years rhubarb doesn't come back here because it doesn't stay cold enough but we try to save the seed pods to replant. We leave the pods on the plant until they are brown and dry, then snip them, crush between fingers, spread out to dry, and store in labeled paper envelopes until the next year. 10 pounds of chicken and produce loaded into the #HarvestRight #freezedryer to preserve. Asparagus is slowing down. Yellow squash, onions, and sweet peppers. Hopefully, it will be a good winter. It takes a lot of preserving during the season to carry a family through the winter. It's not always easy because preserving must come first. If you wait until the veggies are past their prime, the results are lackluster. And it takes some getting used to, to eat everything possible in season. You have to be able to eat the same thing every day and ditch the mentality of bowing to what you feel like eating. You must eat what you have. Kraut! A Disaster Food cabbage and sea salt is all you need to make and preserve the yummiest kraut around. Delis may be closed but you can still eat well. We used an extra large cabbage, cut it tiny, and 3 tablespoons pink sea salt. The Easy Fermenter lids and weights work well on our gallon Ball jars. Everything on today's menu came from the Foodbank emergency distribution. Beautiful corn, ham, and all the ingredients for an awesome potato soup. Thankful for the farmers still growing and producing the things we cannot. On a mission to curb waste. Yesterday, I rendered all the fat trimmed from the ham and got a pint and a half! Great flavor for homemade goodies. The corn silks were made into tea last night. The gusts and peeels were used to expand the worm bins this morning!
